The Heir And The Servent Started From A Bet novel Chapter 39

Chapter 39

After work, Mia couldn’t avoid Emily any longer. The girl had been hovering around her like a protective hawk, her concern

evident.

Emily wasn’t exactly a friend. She was more of a coworker, someone who happened to notice Mia’s exhaustion and sadness and decided to step in. Lately, though, Emily had been acting more like a friend than anyone else in Mia’s life.

But this wasn’t something Mia wanted to share. It was too humiliating, too raw.

She spent the rest of her shift hidden in the staff room, unable to face the whispers or curious glances from her coworkers. Her mind replayed the events of the evening over and over-the slap, Zoe’s cutting words, and Alex’s cold indifference. Every memory felt like a stab to her already broken heart.

When the shift finally ended, Mia grabbed her things and walked out with Emily, the weight of the evening still crushing her.

As they reached the bus stop, Emily finally broke the silence. “Mia, you have to tell me what’s going on. What did that girl?”

Mia hesitated, her fingers gripping the strap of her bag tightly. She wanted to keep this to herself, to bury the humiliation and pretend it didn’t exist. But the concern in Emily’s voice and the warmth of her presence made it hard to lie.

“It’s complicated,” Mia mumbled.

Emily’s eyes narrowed. “Complicated how?”

Mia sighed, staring at the empty road ahead. “I… I had something with Alex

Emily gasped, her face a mixture of shock and disbelief. “You and Alex?”

Mia nodded, already regretting saying anything.

“Like, you and Alex Blackwell?” Emily repeated, her voice louder this time.

“It was nothing,” Mia said quickly. “Just a date-”

“A date?” Emily’s jaw practically dropped. “You and Alex Blackwell went on a date?”

Mia winced at the incredulity in her tone but didn’t blame her. People like them didn’t go on dates with people like Alex Blackwell. They served them drinks and food, cleaned up after them, but never sat at the same table.

“It was nothing,” Mia insisted. “Zoe found out, and now-well, you saw what happened today.”

Emily stared at her, still trying to process. “That’s…” She trailed off, clearly speechless.

The two sat down on the bench to wait for the bus. The silence between them stretched, Emily clearly struggling to wrap her head around what Mia had just told her.

“Did you-”

“Can we not talk about it anymore?” Mia interrupted, her voice shaky. She couldn’t take any more questions, couldn’t handle dissecting her humiliation again.

Emily nodded quickly. “Yeah, of course. I’m sorry.”

The rest of the wait was quiet, with Emily trying to fill the awkwardness by bringing up random topics. Mia appreciated the effort, but her mind was elsewhere, her thoughts consumed by the events of the night.

When Mia finally got home, all she wanted to do was collapse into bed and sleep. Her body felt heavy, and her mind ached from the emotional toll of the evening.

But as she walked into the living room, she was greeted by the sight of her sister Lily struggling to fit into a too-tight dress.

“Jesus, this thing is way too tight!” Lily groaned, twisting and turning as Anna and their mother tried to adjust the fabric.

“What’s going on?” Mia asked, her voice dull with exhaustion.

“I found a dress for the unicorn party,” Lily said, puffing out her cheeks as she tried to suck in her stomach.

“Oh,” Mia replied, her mind immediately drifting to Alex. Would he go to the party? Probably. Events like that were hosted by the wealthy, and Alex was always in the middle of everything.

She shook her head, forcing the thought away. Don’t think about him. Stop thinking about him.

Her mother glanced at her briefly. “What’s been going on with you, Mia? You’ve been so not you lately.”
