The Heir And The Servent Started From A Bet novel Chapter 49

Chapter 49

“What the fuck is going on here?”

Zoe’s voice cut through the night like a sharp blade.

Alex didn’t turn. His eyes were still locked on Mia, watching as she stiffened, her entire body going tense. Then her gaze lifted to his, and then he saw it.

Fear.

Not the usual irritation or fire she threw at him when they argued.

She looked scared.

And something in Alex’s chest twisted in a way that felt wrong.

Without thinking, he acted.

He grabbed Mia’s wrist, pulling her away from the car just enough so he could open the door.

Her wide, startled eyes blinked up at him, confusion flashing across her face.

But he didn’t give her time to question it.

He pushed her inside.

Mia gasped, her hands catching the edge of the seat as he shut the door behind her, locking her in before she could argue.

Then, with a deep breath, he turned to face Zoe.

She was already staring at him like he had grown another head.

The two of them stood in silence, the tension thick between them.

Zoe blinked, then let out a sharp laugh, shaking her head.

“Explain,” she said, her voice firm. “Right now, Alex. I want to know what the hell is going on.”

Alex met her glare with a calm expression. He knew his lack of reaction was pissing her off even more, but that was just who he was. Nothing ever really moved him.

And yet-

He could still feel the warmth of Mia’s skin on his fingertips.

That small detail shouldn’t matter.

But for some reason, it did.

Zoe took a step closer, her arms crossed over her chest. “I’m waiting.”

Alex exhaled through his nose. “For what?”

“For you to tell me why the hell Turner is in your car!”

Alex tilted his head slightly. “I’m going to drop her off.”

Zoe stared at him.

Then she let out another laugh, but this one was different-bitter, disbelieving.

“You’re going to drop her off?” she repeated, like she needed to hear it again to make sure she wasn’t imagining things. “Alex, you’re going to drop off a Turner? Am I missing something here? Is there an ongoing game you’re playing with her that I don’t know about?”

Alex didn’t react.

Because the truth was, he didn’t have an answer.

None of this made sense, not to Zoe, not to himself.

The game, the bet-it was all over.

He was supposed to go back to how things were.

He was supposed to treat Mia like every other Turner.

Like dirt.

But right now, with her in his car, still shaken from what happened with Phill, all those thoughts felt… irrelevant.

Zoe narrowed her eyes, waiting for him to say something, anything.

When he didn’t, her frustration grew.

“So why is she in your car, Alex?” she demanded. “Why are you even talking to her? There’s no game, no bet-so what the hell are you doing in the same space as her?”

Alex shrugged.

He doesn’t think he owes Zoe an explanation, I mean considering how their relationship has always been.

Hell, he didn’t even owe himself one.

What was he going to be explaining… he has no explanation to give.

But still, he knew he should be answering differently.

He knew he should be pushing Mia away, acting like she was nothing more than a speck of dust on his shirt.

But instead, he was here.

Standing between Zoe and the car.

Like he was protecting Mia.

Zoe’s eyes burned into him, her patience wearing thin.

Her voice dropped, her tone sharp. “Tell her to get out of your car.”

Alex finally sighed, shaking his head.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because I said so.”

Alex let out a short, humorless chuckle. “Can’t do that, Zoe.”

And before she could argue, he turned away, walking to the driver’s side.

Zoe’s mouth fell open slightly, her face a mix of shock and anger.

She looked at him like she couldn’t believe what was happening.

Like she couldn’t believe he was doing this.

But Alex didn’t stop.

He opened the door, slid inside, and shut it behind him.

He sat there, gripping the wheel, trying to figure out what the hell he was doing.

Mia was sitting stiffly in the passenger seat, her hands clenched into fists on her lap, wide eyes staring at him like he was some kind of puzzle she couldn’t figure out.

He met her stare, unreadable.

“Seatbelt, Turner.”

His voice was calm, but there was something sharp beneath it.

Mia blinked, snapping out of her daze. She fumbled for the seatbelt, clicking it into place.

Alex started the car, his gaze flickering to the rearview mirror. Zoe was still standing where he left her, arms crossed, watching him like she was expecting him to change his mind.

He didn’t.

Instead, he pulled onto the road.

Mia was still staring at him, her lips parted slightly like she wanted to say something but didn’t know where to start.

The silence stretched between them.

Then-

“Stop staring at me like you want me to pull over and fuck you in the back of my car.”

Mia choked on her spit.

Her entire body jerked as she coughed violently, her face turning red.

Alex smirked, eyes still on the road. “That’s not going to happen. I don’t pay for sex, Turner.”

Mia whipped her head toward him, eyes blazing.

“Pay-” she sputtered, still catching her breath. Then, her glare sharpened. “You’re really an asshole.”

Alex chuckled. “Did I lie?”

“You paid for dates, Blackwell,” she snapped. “I didn’t ask for your money.”

He hummed. “Yet you took it.”

Mia clenched her jaw.

He stares at him.

He was so fucking gorgeous-the kind of gorgeous that made people lose their common sense. But his mouth? It was like poison, always aiming to hurt her.

She hated herself for still finding him attractive, even now, when he was doing nothing but throwing knives at her.

“You pestered me to take the money,” she shot back. “Obviously to free yourself from the guilt of using me in your little toy game with your girlfriend.”

Alex let out a low chuckle.

“Is that what you tell yourself?”

“No,” Mia hissed. “That’s what happened.”

Alex laughed again, deep and amused, like this was all just entertainment to him.

God, she hated him.

Hated the way he always acted like he was untouchable. Like nothing ever got to him.

Mia turned her head sharply, forcing herself to look out the window.

The streetlights blurred past them.

The only sound in the car was the low hum of the engine and the occasional click of the turn signal.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Mia broke the silence.

“I thought you hated me,” she muttered, still looking outside.

Alex didn’t hesitate.

“I do.”

Mia’s chest tightened.

She should’ve known that was coming.
