Chapter 48
Phill yanked himself away from Mia like he had been caught committing a crime.
Mia stumbled back, her breath ragged, her chest rising and falling as she coughed. Her throat felt raw, her heart hammering so hard against her ribs that she thought it might crack through.
She lifted a shaking hand to her chest, trying to steady herself, but her entire body felt unsteady-weak.
The air around her was thick, suffocating.
“Mr Blackwell ” Phil stammers out.
Blackwell?
And then she heard his voice.
“Get lost.”
A deep, commanding voice that made the ground beneath her feel even less stable.
Mia looked up, eyes still blurry, just in time to see Phill freeze, his entire face going pale.
“i uh…” Phill stammered, his voice barely above a whisper, his gaze darting between Mia and Alex like he was trying to figure out how badly he had just screwed up.
Alex didn’t say another word. He didn’t need to.
Phill nodded quickly before scurrying off, running back inside the club like a coward.
The silence that followed was loud.
Mia was still trying to catch her breath, her throat still burning, but she felt it-the weight of his stare.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze to meet his.
And the moment their eyes locked, everything else disappeared.
The street noise, the distant sound of music booming from inside the club, the cold night air against her skin-nothing existed in that moment except him.
Alex Blackwell.
His sharp features were shadowed under the streetlights, his jaw clenched, his dark eyes unreadable as they burned into hers.
He looked at her like he was searching for something.
But Mia didn’t know what.
And she sure as hell wasn’t going to be the one to ask.
She braced herself for whatever was about to come next, already expecting the worst.
“Do you have a trouble magnet on you or something? Turner” He adds her name in that his condescending tone

Mia let out a breath, a dry, humorless laugh escaping her lips. Of course.
Of course, Alex Blackwell would turn this moment into an insult.
It was what he did best.
It didn’t matter that he had just saved her. It didn’t matter that, for a brief second, she thought she saw something else in his expression-something that looked a lot like concern.
Because in the end, he would always be him.
Cold. Detached. Always looking for a way to make her feel less than a human.
She exhaled through her nose, dropping her gaze.
“Thank you for helping me,” she muttered, forcing the words out even though she hated saying them.
Alex didn’t respond.
He just kept staring at her.
His silence made her skin burn, made the air feel heavier.
She needed to leave.
She needed to get a cab, go home, and forget that this entire night had ever happened.
“So, what happened?”
His voice was quieter now. But there was something in his tone, something that made her hesitate.
Like he actually wanted to know.
Mia pressed her lips together.
What was the point of answering? He’d only twist it into something ugly.
His hands slid into his pockets as he tilted his head slightly, his gaze still burning into hers.
“He refused to pay well or what?”
Mia froze.
Her entire body went stiff.
For a second, she thought she had misheard him.
But when she looked up at him, at the smirk playing at the corner of his mouth, at the way he was just standing there, waiting for her reaction-she realized she hadn’t.
The words had come from his mouth.
They had actually come from his damn mouth.
Her hands curled into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms.

Chapter 48
She wanted to say something.
She wanted to yell.
She wanted to ask him why-why he always went out of his way to say the most hurtful things. What did she ever do to him?
Why did he hate her so much?
But she didn’t.
She refused to give him the satisfaction of knowing that his words had cut her.
So instead, she turned away.
She didn’t trust herself to speak.
She just needed to leave.
But before she could take a single step, a strong hand wrapped around her wrist.
Mia gasped, her head snapping up as Alex pulled her back.
Her body collided against his for the briefest second before he started dragging her in the opposite direction.
“What are you doing?!” Panic spiked in her voice as she struggled against his grip.
“Taking you home,” he said simply.
“No. Let me go!” She tried to yank her wrist free, pushing against his arm, but he didn’t budge.
He didn’t even look like he was exerting any effort.
Like dragging her to his car was the easiest thing in the world.
Her heart pounded wildly as he stopped beside his sleek black car.
Then he turned her, backing her against the passenger side.
Mia stumbled slightly, pressing her palm against the cool metal as she glared up at him.
“What is your problem? What do you want from me?!” she snapped, her voice shaking.
Alex chuckled.
But it wasn’t a normal chuckle.
It was low.
Mocking.
Like he enjoyed how frustrated she was.
Then he took a step forward.
Mia sucked in a sharp breath as her back pressed harder against the car.

He was too close.
His scent filled her lungs-clean, rich, intoxicating.
His hands came up, resting on the car on either side of her head, trapping her in place.
Mia felt her stomach tighten.
Felt her pulse skyrocket.
She should move.
She should push him away.
But she didn’t.
She couldn’t.
Because her eyes were locked on his.
Dark.
Intense.
