To Love a Shadow To Be the Sun novel Chapter 133

Brian was just about to speak when Yves Caldwell's phone began to ring.

"Assistant Caldwell, Director Lowell has already met with Director Wood. Have you informed Mr. Vincent?"

Yves glanced at Brian, catching his silent cue.

"Keep an eye on things. We'll be there in forty minutes."

He hung up and started the car.

"Elara!" Ryan's shout echoed, but Brian was already gone, striding out of the room. Since Brian had dismissed the waitstaff, there was no one left to help.

Ryan pulled out his phone instinctively, searching for his father's number, but his finger froze above the screen, hesitating.

Meanwhile, Jason and Elara tumbled down the steep hillside, branches and loose stones battering them as they rolled. Ryan's calls never reached them; they were too far gone, caught in the chaos.

Luckily, at the bottom of the slope, an old disused path ran along the cliff's edge, flanked on one side by two rows of trees. The trees finally broke their fall, stopping them from tumbling further.

When Elara regained her senses, she realized she was sprawled across Jason's chest. Embarrassed, she scrambled off him—only to gasp as pain shot through her entire body.

Jason wasn't any better off. His bathrobe had come loose, and his skin was covered in fresh scratches from thorns and rocks. As Elara moved away, he stirred awake as well.

There was no flashlight, but at least the moonlight was bright enough tonight.

"You okay?" Elara asked quietly.

Jason sat up, rolling his neck with a grimace. "I'll live."

"I'm sorry," Elara said.

Jason paused, caught off guard.

She continued, "They were probably after me."

"You have that many enemies?" Jason asked, his tone suddenly more serious.

"Won't your brother send help?" Elara asked.

Jason scoffed, as if she'd told a joke. "My brother? The hopeless one?"

He shot her a teasing look. "Miss Jules, just so you know, he may have a law degree, but he's never argued a case in court. If you're thinking of hiring him for your divorce, you might end up losing more than just your marriage."

Elara caught the implication in his words. "So, Mr. Lawrence, you haven't given up betting on me yet?"

Jason inhaled, steeling himself against the pain. "My offer is a lot more tempting than Brian's shackles, isn't it?"

But Elara turned away, gaze fixed on the darkness beyond.

"I'll melt his chains down myself."

Seeing she wouldn't accept his help, Jason picked a direction and started walking alone.
