Elara's throat burned as if she'd swallowed smoke, her head spinning, but she still managed to grit out, "I can't afford Mr. Vincent's water. Better save it for your stepsister."
Quentin's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
Brian's eyes darkened as he rose from his seat. "So whose water do you prefer then? Jason's? Or Ryan's?"
Elara steadied herself, refusing to meet his gaze. "Who I prefer doesn't concern you, Mr. Vincent."
Brian turned on his heel and stormed off, but he hadn't gotten far before his phone buzzed. It was Yves Caldwell.
He barely had the phone to his ear when, at the table behind him, Elara's vision went black. She collapsed onto the floor.
"Elara!"
"Mrs. Vincent!"
Summer, Quentin, and even the caddies rushed to her side.
Brian spun around, but Yves's voice crackled through the phone. "Mr. Vincent, Ms. Winters is emotionally unstable—she just injured Miss Winters. Now her depression's flared up again, and we can't medicate her."
Brian pinched the bridge of his nose, frustration simmering. "Where's my father?"
"Mr. Gareth's on a business trip—he's on a flight right now. Can't be reached."
"Send a car for me. Now."
He quickened his pace, barely registering the commotion behind him, and hurried away.
As Brian's car sped out of the country club, an ambulance rushed past in the opposite direction.
Yves, riding in the car with Brian, couldn't help but ask, "I saw Miss Calloway return to the hotel last night with some medicine. Could Mrs. Vincent be ill?"
Brian frowned, recalling Elara's stubborn resistance. His voice was cold. "She always seems perfectly fine when she's with the Lawrence brothers. Even if she's sick, she won't die. Don't worry about her."
…
Summer grasped Elara's hand, her grip tight with frustration. "He didn't even bother to look at our work. He just assumes that as Mrs. Vincent, you're nothing without Brian."
Elara didn't get angry, but a sharp determination flickered in her eyes.
"Then I'll tear up this label myself, so one day he'll find me out of his league."
Summer stared at her. "So what's your plan?"
Elara thought for a moment. "Every year around this time, Brian attends an important clean energy summit."
Summer's eyes widened. "You mean the Synergy Summit? That's a huge event—every major player in the industry gets an invitation. It's invite-only. It's in one week."
"Will Ignition Dynamics be invited?" Elara asked.
Summer hesitated, her confidence wavering. "This year… it might be tough."
