To Love a Shadow To Be the Sun novel Chapter 335

She’d never found the right moment to tell him she was already divorced.

Well, look at that—now he’d practically thrown himself at her feet, volunteering to be the man in her life who had to lurk in the shadows.

Fine. Since he was so determined to fight for the job, she’d at least give him the title he was after: the “other man.”

Elara lowered her eyes. “I’ve met your wife. She’s beautiful. We both have our chains. Maybe you don’t care about your own reputation, but I can’t just throw mine away.”

Zane hesitated, his voice softening. “I’m not married.”

Elara lifted her gaze, fixing him with a look. “So that woman parading around your room in a sheer nightgown—what exactly is your relationship with her?”

Zane blinked, confused for a moment.

Had Pearl really done that?

Didn’t matter. He decided to trust Elara’s version.

“Listen, technically speaking, Pearl is my sister-in-law. But that so-called ‘marriage’ with her sister isn’t what you think. I have my reasons, but I’d never drag you into something immoral.”

Elara still felt lost, as if she were wandering through fog.

After a moment’s silence, she slipped her hand from his.

“Bottom line: you’re not single, at least not officially. I don’t want to be the other woman in anyone’s marriage.”

And just like that, Zane found himself dismissed. A flare of frustration burned in his chest.

Elara went about her nightly routine, brushing her teeth and washing up on her own, then climbed straight into bed.

There were no blankets, so she curled up fully dressed, making do with what she had.

She rolled over, then paused, glancing at the man sitting in stony silence on the chair. “Are you planning to sit there all night?”

Zane, annoyed but not angry, didn’t respond.

Elara shifted, lying on her back with her eyes closed. “I’m just worried you’ll throw your back out staying up all night and mess up tomorrow’s plans…”

Zane chuckled softly, his breath tickling her ear. “Thirty-something is prime time for a man—strength, stamina, patience. I’ve got it all. Want to find out?”

Elara, finally outmatched, turned her face away and refused to answer.

Zane pulled her into his arms, calming himself before speaking in a more serious tone. “Get some sleep. When we get back, you should get a full checkup, just to be safe.”

At the mention of something real, Elara looked up. “How’s Jason?”

Zane’s brow furrowed. “Last I heard before I came here, he was still in surgery. Lina… she’s still searching.”

Elara fell silent, and for a while, neither of them spoke. Only the pounding rain outside filled the room.

It was impossible to say how much time had passed before, in the stillness, Zane’s eyes flew open. He grabbed Elara, rolling them both off the bed just as—

A dark figure crashed through the window.

The intruder was covered head to toe in black, eerie patterns inked across his face.
