His gaze settled on Elara's stunned face. "Is there a problem with that approach?" he asked.
"Shouldn't you be at the hospital right now?" Elara asked.
"You were right last night. My sister never gave up on this company, even during its toughest times. Now that she needs to rest, the only thing I can do as her brother is to ensure she can do so without worry, by protecting the dream she worked so hard to build."
He addressed the room again. "Until Summer returns, I will be serving as the interim General Manager, responsible for operations and strategic decisions. Director Jules will continue to lead the technical team and focus on enhancing our core products. While managing a company is different from managing a hospital, the underlying principles are the same. I hope you will all join me in driving Ignition Dynamics forward."
So, for Summer, he had resigned from his position at the hospital to protect her company.
After a few seconds of silence, Elara began to clap.
Although she was surprised by Charles's decision, she respected it. Now, he would need to get up to speed on the company's operations, but with the help of the executive assistants, that wouldn't be a problem.
"We're searching for a heart match for her," Charles later told her in private. "And my father left for Capital City today to meet with the lab director. We're hoping he brings back good news."
Elara nodded. Just as she was about to speak, her phone rang. It was Brian. She declined the call. A minute later, a text message came through.
*"Don't you want to know who hurt your friend?"*
Elara's fingers hovered over the screen. A second message followed. It was the address of an outdoor cafe, not far from where Zane worked.
After a moment of hesitation, she went.
Brian had arrived first and ordered an iced Americano for her. He studied her for a moment, noting her composed demeanor. "I thought you'd be a wreck after what happened to your friend—unable to eat or sleep. It seems I was worrying for nothing."
