To Love a Shadow To Be the Sun novel Chapter 365

Zane stood at the door, not moving.

Quincy Shelton glanced inside and asked, just loud enough to be heard, "Sir, are you going in?"

Both people in the room turned to look. Ryan quickly buttoned his shirt and stood up. "Uncle Zane."

Zane finally walked in. "Are you all right?"

Ryan took the jacket Elara offered him. "How hard can Aunt Fiona hit? I'm fine."

"So, did I come at a bad time?" Zane asked, his tone unreadable.

Ryan was taken aback.

Elara, avoiding Zane's gaze, straightened Ryan's shirt and led him toward the door. "Are you going to the office or home to rest?"

"The office. If I go home now…"

Elara smiled. "You were brave enough to stand up to Fiona for me, but you're afraid to face her alone?"

A bitter smile touched Ryan's lips. "My father told me to respect her."

Elara walked him to his car. "Even though the skin isn't broken, you'll need to change the dressing. Do you know where to go for that?"

Ryan nodded. He would go to his mother's place at Celestial River Estates. He was about to get in his car when he turned back and grabbed her wrist. "I know you moved into the estate to investigate," he whispered. "But I don't think it was Mrs. Lawrence."

Elara raised an eyebrow.

"I've had my people watching her," Ryan explained.

"Go to the office and apologize to your father first," Elara said, pulling her hand away.

As his car drove off, she turned to face the man standing under the hospital awning. Zane's expression was grim.

Elara walked up to him and sniffed the air around him.

Elara froze, remembering his medical report. Her eyes instinctively flickered downward, confirming her suspicions, and her face turned a deep shade of red. Just as he was guiding her hand, there was a knock on the window. It was Quincy Shelton.

Like a startled bird, Elara yanked her hand away and scrambled to the other side of the car, putting as much distance between them as possible.

Zane sighed, straightened his clothes, and lowered the window. "This had better be important."

His icy tone made Quincy flinch. "Sir, we just saw Mrs. Lawrence being brought in by an ambulance. Her hand is all bandaged up."

*Great,* Elara thought. *A splash of cold tea, and now she's trying to extort me.*

"Ignore her," Zane said dismissively. "Drive."

Mrs. Lawrence was quickly admitted, her hand wrapped in so many bandages it looked like it was about to be amputated. She had her assistant notify Victor's and had the doctor hook her up to an IV drip, intending to wait for her husband to arrive and defend her honor.

But her plan failed. The IV bag emptied, and her blood sugar soared, but there was still no sign of Victor.
