A jolt went through Elara, but her serene expression didn't waver.
"What, you think I should have stayed to finish cooking my own breakfast?" she retorted coolly.
Jason chuckled and opened the car door for her. "I'm glad you care about me."
Elara didn't take the bait. She slid into the car, deliberately leaving a noticeable distance between them. Jason watched her profile for a moment, realizing he'd upset her.
"I only asked because I care about you," he explained patiently.
She kept her gaze fixed on the view outside, offering no response.
After a moment of silence, Jason tried again. "My condition has improved enough that I can recover at home. The doctors have a treatment plan, and I intend to follow it."
At that, Elara's demeanor softened. She turned her eyes from the window to him. "Good. I hope you get well soon, and that you remember how we're supposed to be with each other."
The smile on Jason's lips faded slightly, a shadow of disappointment flickering in his eyes.
The car pulled up to an elegant breakfast restaurant. They got out together, but Jason naturally took a half-step lead, subtly positioning Elara behind him. Inside, though he gallantly pulled out her chair, he took the menu from the waiter and smoothly ordered several dishes before handing it back, all without once asking what she might like.
"I ordered all the restaurant's specialties," he said. "Trust me, you'll like them."
Elara just smiled, not saying a word. She had her own reasons for meeting with him.
Jason smiled. "Not entirely. The Grove family itself holds a unique position in Capital City. Mr. Grove is a national treasure in the field of integrated circuits and has been targeted by foreign assassins multiple times over technological secrets. Even with Vera's academic standing, marrying into the Grove family was, in a way, just icing on the cake for her."
He spoke slowly, with a detached calm. "The Grove family's foundation isn't built on wealth, but on irreplaceable technology and influence. A family like that doesn't need to compete in terms of money or power to command respect."
A hint of contempt touched Elara's eyes. "So, for a family that even you are trying to curry favor with, it doesn't matter what terrible things they do? No one would ever hold them accountable."
Jason shook his head. "The Groves have very strict values. They treat their adopted children as their own and raise them with great care. Besides, their children are all very low-key and never cause trouble."
*Just because someone doesn't look like a bad person doesn't mean they aren't one,* Elara thought to herself.
