Yves Caldwell knew he'd made a serious mistake. Awkwardly, he glanced at Elara.
"Ma'am, I'm so sorry. Mr. Vincent asked me to bring Mr. Sunderland to see you at the hospital, but as soon as we arrived, we ran into Miss Vincent. She insisted Ms. Winters' case was more urgent, so…"
He trailed off, too embarrassed to finish.
Elara didn't miss a beat, filling in the rest for him.
"So you couldn't do anything, and just let her take the doctor who was supposed to see me. Didn't manage to follow Mr. Vincent's orders. Should I go beg for leniency on your behalf when we get home?"
Yves looked utterly remorseful. "I'm really sorry, ma'am."
"Don't blame Assistant Caldwell, please."
Mr. Sunderland had just left, but Lina stepped forward, standing protectively in front of Yves.
"It was me—if you want to blame someone, blame me. I was worried about my mom."
If winning hearts was a contest, Lina had mastered the game.
Elara arched an eyebrow. "Why would I blame you? The only reason you get to act out in front of me like this is because of Brian, isn't it?"
Right then, Brian's call came through. Elara answered.
"Did you see the doctor? What did Mr. Sunderland say?"
She glanced at Yves, her tone even. "Didn't see him. He's already left."
Brian's frustration was palpable through the phone.
"Elara, I asked you to see a doctor for your own good. Why do you have to be so stubborn and use your health to get back at me? When will you ever stop being so childish?"
She hung up on him, ignoring the two standing beside her, and left the hospital.
Elara worked late at Ignition Dynamics, not returning to Platinum Bay until after ten.
Surprisingly, the living room was still brightly lit.
Elara's eyes glinted with cold sarcasm. "Sorry, I thought you stopped me from going upstairs so your little sister and assistant could apologize. Turns out you just wanted to warn me not to upset your precious sister. Well, message received. Can I go to bed now?"
"Elara!" Brian's patience was wearing thin. "What will it take for you to stop making a scene?"
There it was—somehow, everything was always her fault.
Elara's lips twisted into a smile that never reached her eyes.
"Kick your sister out of the house, and I'll stop."
Brian's jaw tightened, his whole demeanor turning icy.
Suddenly, Lina darted toward Elara, dropping to her knees with a loud thud.
"Sis, it's all my fault. My dad's already gone, and my mom is all I have left. I was desperate for Mr. Sunderland to give us hope, but he said she's terminal and refused to prescribe anything. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Please don't blame Brian, and don't fight with him. He loves you, I swear—please don't break his heart."
Her thin shoulders trembled, and when she looked up, her lashes were wet with tears, making her look like a baby bird caught in the rain.
