Chapter 107
Hearing that Sophia wasn’t with Richard, Lucas felt much more at ease. He instructed. “Keep an eye on her at the industrial park and let me know when she comes out.”
“Understood, Mr. Westwood, the bodyguard replied.
After hanging up the phone, Lucas propped his legs on the coffee table, crossing them. He fiddled with his phone, thinking that maybe his own impure thoughts made everything seem tainted.
‘A man of Richard’s standing could have any woman he desired. Why would he ever stoop to someone who wasn’t brand new? I wouldn’t touch a used woman myself, even for a fling. By that same logic, Richard would have zero interest in Sophia,‘ he thought.
Just as Lucas was finishing talking himself down, the office door was suddenly thrown open. Emily swept in like a tornado.
She said, “Lucas, right after you left, Richard went on a shopping spree for Sophia. He pretty much emptied out the whole boutique for her.”
Lucas’s eyes narrowed. “Are you serious?”
“Would I ever lie to you? Honestly, Lucas, don’t you think Sophia’s just making a fool out of you? She actually took all those gifts. If word goes out, can you imagine what people will say behind your back?” Emily pressed.
Emily looked indignant, defending Lucas. Lucas had just finished comforting himself, but upon hearing that Richard had bought Sophia an entire boutique’s worth of clothes, he was immediately shaken.
“Is she some kind of beggar, taking whatever clothes other men give her? Tell Wendy, if Sophia dares to bring those clothes back, throw every last piece out,” Lucas snapped.
‘No wonder she said she doesn’t need clothes. Someone’s buying them for her. Well, isn’t that something,‘ he thought.
Emily had seen many new styles at the boutique today and was already struggling to choose. Now, Richard had bought all of them for Sophia. Jealous and envious, she came to Lucas to complain, not necessarily to have him throw the clothes away.
She put on her sweetest act and said, “Lucas, tossing them out is way too mild. Why not hand them all over to me instead? That’ll really teach her not to just accept gifts from other guys so carelessly.”
Lucas felt as sweet as if he had eaten honey. If only Sophia could be as obedient as Emily, it would be perfect. But recently, she had been acting rebellious and was not at all likable.
Everyone was busy with their own work when she came in, and clearly, no one was surprised. They just kept doing their thing as usual.
Linda walked over with a stack of reports. “Sophia, you’re finally here. Can you help me look over this data?”
Sophia took the reports, sat down on a high stool, and began reviewing them. After she finished, she shared several of her ideas and recommendations for adjusting the direction of the research.

Linda had an epiphany. “So that’s why my experiments haven’t made any progress lately. I was so fixated on one part that I overlooked the real issue.”
“Sometimes when we get too caught up in our own perspective, it’s normal to miss what’s actually wrong. No need to rush or worry.” Sophia reassured her.
Linda closed the reports and spoke in a hushed tone, just for Sophia. “Yadel Group got in touch. They’re throwing out a huge salary to try and lure me back.”
Sophia wasn’t surprised at all. She kept her cool and asked, “So, what do you want to do?”
“I don’t want to go back. It’s so free at Pioneer Institute, and I have a group of like–minded friends there.” Linda really enjoyed working with her colleagues at Pioneer Institute.
Sophia narrowed her eyes, a sly idea forming fast. She lowered her voice and said, “Linda, just play along for now. Tell them yes, but don’t really mean it.”
