She plugged in a USB stick, copied the experiment data, yanked off her badge, and tossed it in the trash without another glance.

Before leaving, she paused for just a second, looking at Sophia, who passed out on the desk. “Sophia, don’t blame me. You just had too much going for you.”

Then she left without a hint of regret, never looking back.

The doors swung open and closed, and the place went dead quiet.

Moments before, Sophia had been completely unconscious, but now she raised her head slowly, watching Linda leave. A faint, knowing smile played at her lips.

Half an hour later, Annabelle rushed into the lab. The moment she saw Sophia unconscious on the desk, she dropped her bag and car keys on the floor.

“Sophie, wake up.” Annabelle’s voice shook with fear as she yelled, desperate to get a response.

Sophia was totally out, like she was dead to the world.

Panic hit Annabelle hard, and her hands shook as she called the ambulance.

Fifteen minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The paramedics loaded Sophia onto a stretcher and rushed her straight into the back of the ambulance.

With sirens blaring, the ambulance sped off.

Linda, lurking in the shadows, finally confirmed that Sophia was knocked out cold. She whipped out her phone and called someone.

She said, “Dad, you promised that if I got my hands on the formula for skin regeneration, you’d let me reclaim my place in the family.

“I’ve got it. Right now, I’m the only hope Yadel Group has left.”

Annabelle stayed glued to Sophia’s side inside the ambulance. The doctor said Sophia had just drunk water spiked with a heavy dose of sleeping meds and would be out cold for a while, but Annabelle couldn’t help feeling on edge.

“Sophie, you really shouldn’t have risked yourself like that. What if Linda really tried to poison you?” Annabelle said, her voice trembling.

The doctor, Callie Allen, who was Annabelle’s close friend, chimed in, “She’s been burning the midnight oil nonstop. Honestly, she needs some rest.”

“Are you sure she’ll be okay?” Annabelle pressed.

“What, don’t you trust me?” Callie sighed, halfway amused. “She’s fine. She’s just too tired. Let her sleep.”

“I know, but I still can’t help worrying about her,” Annabelle said, watching Sophia with obvious concern.

Callie nudged her. “Forget stressing over Sophia. I’d be way more worried about someone swiping your formula for skin regeneration. Do you want your years of work going to someone else?”

Annabelle shot Callie a cool look. “My stuff isn’t that easy to take.”

Callie caught her expression and grinned. “Alright, I get it. That’s what I wanted to hear.”

Sophia was out cold for two days, knocked out by the sleeping pills. While she was out, two things happened.

First, Yadel Group announced that the launch event for their new regenerating cream would be held in just a week.

Second, Billy had tracked down his long–lost illegitimate daughter. Before the product launch, he was throwing a big family reunion party to welcome her back into the Westwood family.

As soon as the news broke, social media exploded, and everyone was talking about it.

The Westwood family, infamous yet undeniably popular, had once again mastered the art of staying in the spotlight.

It wasn’t until the following night that Sophia finally woke up, groggy but alert. The first thing she did was look over at Annabelle and ask, “What’s the situation now?”

“Everything’s under control, Sophie, but for real, how did you know Linda would try to steal our research?” Annabelle had spent the last couple of days racking her brain, but she just couldn’t wrap her head around it.

After all, it was Sophia who had recommended Linda to the Pioneer Institute. Sophia had always trusted the people she chose.

Somehow, from the very beginning, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Linda might go after Pioneer Institute’s work.

Sophia sighed. “Didn’t you ever notice how much she resembles Mr. Westwood?”
