Sophia pushed herself up in bed and dialed Annabelle.

“Annabelle. I’m leaving the hospital. Can you handle the discharge paperwork for me?” Sophia said.

She had no intention of giving Margaret another chance to bother her.

Sophia checked out of the hospital late at night, and Annabelle quickly took her back home so that she could get a rest. But Sophia wasn’t the type to just sit around and do nothing.

Now that she knew Charles had a brother, Sophia finally had a lead to follow.

The next day, Sophia hired a private investigator to start digging into what came before the Evans Group.

“If something existed, it would always leave a mark. No matter how much of a big shot Charles is, there’s no way he could erase every single trace,” Sophia said to Annabelle.

If she really was Marcus’s daughter, maybe there was something fishy about her dad’s death.

Annabelle nodded. “Yeah, but Sophie, you know how it goes–once you start digging, you never know what kind of mess you’ll uncover. Just be ready for whatever comes up.”

If Charles really did snatch Marcus’s inheritance, then chances were, Marcus didn’t just die–he was probably taken out by Charles himself.

Sophia gazed out the floor–to–ceiling window at the city skyline. “I know.”

Honestly, she didn’t even need to dig that deep.

Charles had dumped her in the small town and let her foster family make her life hell–anyone could see he was up to no good.

But Sophia needed to know how her real dad died. She wasn’t about to take revenge blindly.

When Margaret got home, Charles called out to her. “Well? What did Sophia go to that place for?”

“She’s got lips sealed tight—no matter how I pressed, she wouldn’t say a thing. And she even put us on the spot, telling us to kick Emily out of the Evans family,” Margaret replied.

David flipped out the moment he heard that.

“Who the hell does she think she is? Kick Emily out of the Evans family–just because she says so? Who put her in charge?” David snapped.

Emily sat by the side, eyes brimming with tears, looking nervously at Margaret.

“Mom, it’s really okay. I don’t mind at all… if that’s what it takes for Sophia to leave you guys alone, I can move out of the Evans family, Emily whispered.

“That’s my thoughtful girl,” Margaret cooed, pulling Emily close into a protective embrace. “But you don’t have to go anywhere, sweetheart.”

David scoffed, looking annoyed. “Seriously, Sophia’s nothing but an outsider here. If it wasn’t for that trust fund the Uncle Marcus left behind, we would have finished her off a long time ago.”

Emily lowered her eyes. “For the Evans family, I’d go through hell and high water. Nothing is too much–I’d risk everything.

no matter what it takes.”

David narrowed his eyes, cold calculations swirling in his gaze. “Dad, we need to get rid of Sophia. She can’t stay in the world any longer.”

Charles shot him a sharp glare. “Do you seriously think killing someone is as easy as squashing a bug?”

Charles cursed inwardly, ‘Get rid of her, get rid of her… Like I don’t know?

But making her disappear right now? That’s way easier said than done.’

Emily cast a nervous look around at the three Evans family members, her voice barely above a whisper. “Dad, I think I have an idea.”

All three instantly snapped their attention to her. “What kind of idea?”

Emily said, “Dad has got a point–these days one can’t just go around killing people.

“But if we make everyone believe she’s just a homewrecker who sleeps around, once her reputation’s trashed, she’ll be completely shunned in Jelasburg. Nobody will want her.”

Not only did it help the Evans family get rid of the trouble caused by Sophia, but it also allowed Lucas to completely sever ties with her.

If Sophia ended up catching something nasty, Richard would drop her like yesterday’s news.

Emily scoffed inwardly, ‘Even if she splits up with Lucas, there’s no way I’ll let her land someone better.’

Sophia shivered, a chill running down her spine for no reason.

Annabelle caught the strange look on Sophia’s face and asked, “Hey, what’s up? Still not feeling well?”

Sophia shook her head. “I’m fine, really… I just can’t shake this feeling that something bad is about to happen.”
