Chapter 31
As the elevator doors were closing, a hand shot in and stopped it. Sophia’s heart jumped, and she looked up to see David stepping in with a menacing glare. “Who are you calling a rabid dog?” he asked.
Sophia watched him warily, knowing David was a brute in a suit who’d rather throw a punch than argue.
She said, “David, what do you think you’re doing? There are cameras in this elevator. If you lay a hand on me again, I’ll make sure everyone in the company knows what a two–faced bastard you are.”
David was so furious that veins bulged on his forehead. Emily, seeing the situation escalate, couldn’t just stand by idly like last night and watch David beat Sophia up.
She quickly stepped between them. “Sophia, if you’ve got it in for me, fine. But why drag David into this? He’s your brother. How could you call him a bastard?”
Sophia knew Emily never missed a chance to fan the flames. Emily seemed to mediate, but really, she was praying that Sophia and David would come to blows. Sophia eyed her coldly. “Name one brother who’d threaten to beat his sister to a pulp.”
“That’s because you did something wrong,” Emily said, gently touching the gauze on her nose with a pitiful look. “If you hadn’t hit me, why would David have laid a finger on you?”
With her back to David, Emily’s eyes sparked with pure provocation. She was trying to goad Sophia into striking her. Only when the two were at each other’s throats would David shower his affection on her alone.
Sophia’s palm itched, but she clenched her fist. If she threw the first punch, Emily would become the victim, and it would be two against one in a fight. ‘A smart player doesn’t take a losing bet,‘ she thought.
She simply asked, “Are you done?” She couldn’t figure those two out. If they disliked her, they should stay away, yet they kept showing up in front of her to make everyone miserable.
Tears sprang to Emily’s eyes as she gazed pleadingly at Sophia. “I know you don’t like me. I… I shouldn’t have come back.”
With that, she turned and walked out of the elevator, tilting her face just enough to let David see her reddened eyes.
David couldn’t stand watching Emily hurt. He grabbed her wrist while choking Sophia, and then shoved Sophia out of the elevator.
“She’s the one who should leave, or the air in here would be fouled,” he said and then pressed the close button.
Outside the elevator, Sophia leaned against the wall to steady herself. She turned to watch the doors slide shut. Emily stood beside David. The pitiful look on her face was gone, and only triumph remained.
It was as if she were mocking Sophia’s three years of worthless efforts–no matter how hard Sophia tried to win him over, David would never accept her as his sister.
Sophia scoffed, thinking that David, who seemed sharp, was actually so foolish that he hadn’t realized Emily was using him as a pawn.
Sophia’s trip to the Evans Group left her exhausted. When she stepped out of the building, the harsh sunlight fell on her. It should have felt warm, but instead, she was chilled to the bone.
All the time, she yearned for family love, yet no one cared for her. She sought romantic love, but her lover betrayed her. Honestly, she had failed miserably.

“Ms. Evans, right?” An unfamiliar deep male voice came from beside her. Sophia blinked, her eyes dazzled by the sun, and squinted at the tall man before her.
As her vision cleared slowly, she saw the man’s face clearly. “Who are you?”
“I’m Harley Scott, Mr. Sterling’s secretary. Mr. Sterling is waiting for you in the car.” Harley raised a hand, gesturing toward the black Rolls–Royce parked nearby.
Sophia followed his gesture. The car was black, its windows heavily tinted, hiding the inside. But she felt a gaze fixed on her, watching her closely.
She remembered Richard’s cold “No” outside Charles’s office just moments before, so she had no idea why he would be waiting for her downstairs.
Sophia’s heart skipped a beat; he seemed even more intimidating than he had been that night under the dim light. “Mr. Sterling-”
Richard looked away, shifted to the other side, and stared straight ahead. “My father wants to meet you. Get in the car.”
“Don’t be formal with me, Ms. Evans,” Harley said, holding the door frame as she climbed in, then closing the door.
The driver started the car and pulled away. An oppressive silence filled the cabin, choking Sophia. She edged toward the door, wishing she could just jump out.
Suddenly, Richard’s low voice broke the silence. “Who hit your face?”
Sophia startled, turning to meet his deep gaze before realizing he was speaking to her. She mumbled awkwardly, “No one hit me. I just bumped into something.”

Richard clearly didn’t buy it. His long fingers tapped lightly on the armrest in a slow, steady rhythm. “What did you bump into that left a handprint on your face?”
Sophia fell silent, embarrassed and irritated, thinking adults should know better than to cross boundaries.
She claimed it was an accident because she wanted no family scandal aired and no pitying looks. But he insisted on ripping away that last fig leaf, leaving her no dignity at all.
Sophia raised her right hand with a fake smile. “Since you’re so curious, I can slap you and let you find out for yourself.”
Richard slightly raised an eyebrow, thinking, ‘She doesn’t look like a pushover, so how did someone still manage to walk all over her and leave her so wronged?‘
