The elevator dinged and opened to the lobby. Sophia was halfway out the door when she stopped.
A girl was standing there, thumbs hooked in the pockets of a black leather jacket. The cuffs were shredded, showing off studded bracelets that looked intentionally beat–up. Every flick of her wrist made the metal clack like loose bullets.
Sophia stared for a second, just curious.
The girl glanced up, eyeing Sophia like she was sizing up cheap goods on a sale rack. “You done staring?”
Sophia looked away and walked past her, but couldn’t help sneaking another glance. Under all that heavy eyeliner and lipstick, there was something oddly familiar–like looking in a mirror.
Sophia kept going. The doors slid shut behind her. After a moment’s hesitation, she headed out.
Sophia pulled into the garage at Annabelle’s building. The elevator opened directly into the hallway, and Lucas was right there. She could feel the anger rolling off him.
His custom suit and silk tie were on point, but he was messing with them, tugging his tie out of place. He moved in close. “You’re so disappointed to see me?”
After three years of marriage and four years of hopeless devotion, she was done. She’d loved him, cried for him, and let go of every last illusion.
But seeing him still lit a fire of questions she’d never give voice to: Why did he just stop loving her? Was everything in those last six months just a lie?
But her pride kept the questions locked in her throat. “What are you doing here?” she asked instead.
His answer was to wrap a hand around her throat and shove her back against the marble wall. “Who’s the guy?”
Sophia was baffled. “What guy?”
Lucas shoved his phone in her face. “Him!”
On the screen, Harley was shielding her head as she ducked into the car. No kiss, not even touching. Still, Lucas was losing his mind over it.
A bitter taste filled her mouth as she glared. “That’s your proof? You’ve got a filthy mind, Lucas. Don’t drag me into your
crap.
“What did you just say?” Lucas tightened his grip.
Sophia gasped for air but refused to back down. “I said you’re filthy.”
She saw the words hit–saw his pupils flare. Then his mouth crashed down on hers, hard, tasting of whiskey and pure rage.
Her stomach turned even before their teeth clacked together. She wrenched her head away and gagged.
The silence was tense. Lucas glared at her, eyes bloodshot. “How dare you!”
He was furious. He was used to being the one in control, the one who dished out contempt. For her to react this way felt like a slap in the face.

His questions were absurd. All this rage was just because she’d bruised his massive ego. ‘How pathetic,‘ she thought. ‘He has no heart.
She shoved against the brick wall of his chest; it didn’t budge. “When you’re finished throwing your tantrum, let me go.”
He studied her, convinced this was all an act to get his attention. ‘She’ll come crawling back. She always does,‘ he thought.
The anger coursing through him began to shift, heating into a blunt, unmistakable desire. He pinched her chin. “Fine. Let’s go to a hotel.”
Sophia stared back in disbelief. Seeing the raw hunger in his eyes, she felt nothing but pure contempt. She grabbed his wandering hand and shoved it away. “I’m picky about what I touch.”
“Then we’ll go home,” Lucas said, his mind already racing with plans to reclaim her in bed, to bend her back into that devoted woman he used to know. He couldn’t stand her slipping from his control,
“I’m on my period.”
The single line flattened every fantasy in his head. He frowned in disappointment. ‘Let her sulk. She’ll be begging for me soon enough, he thought.
Lucas drove Sophia home. As the car passed through the gates of what was once Nightfall Estate, Sophia immediately spotted the new sign: Cherry Grove. A sharp, fleeting pang hit her, but she quickly looked away.

Lucas caught her reaction. He cleared his throat, a flicker of guilt in his eyes. “I thought ‘Nightfall Estate‘ sounded a little too dramatic. With all the cherry trees, Cherry Grove‘ just fits better. But if you hate it, we can change it back.”
