Chapter 35
Sophia found his explanation the height of irony. He was the one who had chosen the name “Nightfall Estate” just six months ago, a promise that they would watch every sunset here together.
His sweet words once had moved her, but now, his explanation felt hollow.
“Switching it back sounds like a hassle. It’s fine as is,” said Sophia flatly.
After all, she wouldn’t stay long anyway. Lucas’s dismissiveness only hardened her resolve to divorce.
Lucas expected her to blow up and demand he swap the sign back. But her calm indifference threw him.
He felt uneasy and asked, “You’re not mad?”
Sophia replied coolly, “Why would I be mad? It suits the place now.”
Fallen cherry blossoms littered the ground. Dark leaves choked the branches, casting the garden in an unnerving gloom.
Lucas was totally bugged. He’d expected that her tantrums would annoy him, but her indifference now infuriated him even
more.
He grabbed her wrist, face darkening. “Sophia, just beg me, and I’ll get that sign swapped back pronto.”
Sophia eyed him like he was nuts. She wasn’t even trying for him anymore–a sign meant nothing.
“It’s your place. Do whatever you want. I don’t give a damn.” She wrenched free and hopped out of the car.
Lucas watched her walk away, getting more pissed off. ‘What the hell does she mean? Why say it’s my place? Isn’t this her home too?‘ he thought.
Sophia walked in and headed to the entryway to change her shoes. When she opened the shoe cabinet and looked inside, her slippers were missing.
Just then, Emily came downstairs and saw her digging through the shelves. She frowned and leaned against the wall, smirking. “Looking for something, Sophia?”
Sophia kept searching. “My slippers are gone.”
“You mean those ugly blue bunny ones?” Emily scoffed. “They didn’t match the place, so I told the maid to toss them.”
Sophia froze. The feelings she’d held back suddenly boiled over. Her hands shook as she spun around to face Emily, who looked smug as ever, like she owned the place.
Sophia scoffed, “Seriously? I’m still Lucas’s wife, not you. Who put you in charge of my stuff in my own house?”
Emily crossed her arms, totally unfazed. “If I hadn’t stepped back three years ago, you’d never have married into the Westwood family. Try being a little grateful, would you?”
“You bailed just to put me down,” Sophia shot back. “You thought you could play the Evanses and the Westwoods, but you never expected Lucas to marry me so fast.
“Seeing us together for three years, it’s been eating you up, hasn’t it? So why’d you leave in the first place? Why give up being his wife just to come crawling back as the mistress? Don’t you think that’s pathetic?”
Emily’s cheeks flushed as if struck by her words. “You were just my stand–in for three years. And you really think you’re

A cold dread shot through him. “What now?” he snapped. “You just got here and now you’re leaving again? Can’t you just stay put for once? I don’t have time for this.”
She turned to fuss over Lucas’s bleeding head. “Does it hurt? I can’t believe she did that to you. She’s heartless,” Emily said, tearing up.
Sophia scoffed at Emily’s act. “Back off, bitch. I’m teaching my husband a lesson. What’s it got to do with you?”
‘When are these two going to leave me alone?‘ she snarled inwardly.
Emily’s eyes went wide, fake hurt all over her face. “Lucas, how could Sophia call me a bitch?”
Getting hit hadn’t pissed Lucas off as much as that. Shoving Sophia hard, he knocked her to the ground.
Sophia fell, panic spiking as she tried to protect her stomach. She threw out her hands to soften the fall, scraping them bloody on the ground.
Ignoring Sophia’s pain, Lucas pointed in her face and yelled, “Sophia, Emily never did anything to you. Apologize. Now.”
Sitting on the ground, Sophia stared at Lucas’s face, the same face she’d once been crazy about, even in her dreams. Now he just looked like a disgusting stranger. She suddenly started laughing.
Her laughter got louder and louder, making Emily twitch and Lucas shift uncomfortably.
Still laughing, Sophia clumsily scrambled to her feet.
Lucas clenched his fists. “What’s so funny? I said, apologize.”

Sophia finally stopped laughing, grabbed her bag and dusted it off. She shot Lucas a cold look. “You two are perfect for cach other. Go ahead and be together; just leave me out of it.”
