Sophia’s back slammed into the wall with a brutal thud. For a moment, it felt like her insides had been twisted out of place, and the pain was so intense that she nearly blacked out.
Lucas’s kick was even more vicious than the ones David had done before.
Sophia lay sprawled on the floor, the agony so overwhelming it kept her silent for a long while.
Rachel emerged from the kitchen, her eyes widening in shock as she saw Lucas, looking like an enraged lion, wielding a golf club and heading straight for Sophia.
His face contorted with fury, as if he were a demon crawling out of hell, absolutely terrifying.
Rachel shuddered with fear, but she still darted forward, blocking Sophia from Lucas.
She said, “Mr. Westwood, please, Mrs. Westwood is still sick. Let her off just this once.”
Sophia heard Rachel pleading for her. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself upright, her eyes fixing icily on Lucas looming so close.
She said, “Rachel, don’t beg him!”
Lucas was stung by the icy look in Sophia’s eyes. It hurt him more than he cared to admit.
He thought, ‘Why won’t she just give in? Why can’t she plead with me and call me ‘honey‘ like she used to? Why does she have to be so damn stubborn?
‘And what’s with that look, like I’m her mortal enemy? I won’t allow her to look at me that way!‘
Lucas roughly shoved Rachel aside, snatched up the golf club, and swung it hard at Sophia.
The golf club landed on Sophia’s back with a brutal crack. Pain drilled through her like some vicious parasite, gnawing its way from that single point to every nerve in her body.
Sophia couldn’t help but let out a muffled groan. When she saw Lucas rear back to swing at her again, she desperately grabbed the leg of a nearby chair and hurled it at him with every ounce of strength she had.
Sophia was never the type to just lie there and take it. Even when her foster father used to beat her with a whip, she’d fight back every single time–even as a five–year–old kid.
She knew standing up for herself could only make things worse, but she never backed down. She wasn’t exactly the kind of girl anyone found easy to like, and honestly, she didn’t care.
When she should’ve begged for mercy, she’d throw down instead. And when softness was called for, she somehow managed to be even harder.
Lucas swerved aside, dodging her attack. The chair nearly crashed into Emily, who was lingering in the back, watching the chaos with barely concealed amusement.
Emily said, “Sophia, just give in. Admit your mistakes and beg Lucas for forgiveness. Why suffer more than you have to?”
muscle.
With a harsh kick to her face, Lucas taunted, “Weren’t you just acting all tough before? What now, playing dead already?
“You’ve given me plenty of bruises yourself. So don’t think it’s unfair I pay you back just once. Sophia, next time you throw a punch at me, don’t blame me for whatever comes next.”
Sophia was wracked with pain all over. She could barely get any air in, and it felt like she was suffocating.
Rachel, hearing Lucas still sneering, was frantic. She said, “Mr. Westwood, Mrs. Westwood might not make it. Please, call an ambulance!”
Lucas had only wanted to teach Sophia a lesson, not kill her. He tossed the golf club aside.
It clattered to the floor, and Sophia’s eyelids fluttered slightly.
Lucas adjusted his tie, looking down at her with disdain. “She’s nothing but scum. Why should I bother calling an ambulance for her?”
