Chapter 68

He turned to Rachel and said, “Throw her in the utility room. No food, no nothing. She can only stay there until she finally realizes what she did wrong.”

With that, Lucas grabbed Emily’s hand and headed upstairs. “Bet that freaked you out, huh? I’m not normally this rough, but Sophia just made me lose it tonight.”

“I know, Lucas. I’m not afraid of you,” Emily said sweetly, nestling close against his chest. “Honestly, Sophia was way out of line, hitting you like that. She kind of had it coming, didn’t she?”

Lucas cradled her arm with a worried frown. “Does it hurt? Come on, let’s get back to our room. I’ll take care of it.”

“Is that all?” Emily teased, her voice low and full of meaning.

As their voices drifted upstairs, Rachel knelt down by Sophia’s side, her eyes red with worry as she saw Sophia’s breath coming so faint and shallow it looked like she could barely hang on.

Rachel said, “Mrs. Westwood, why put yourself through all this? If only you’d just give in a little to Mr. Westwood, he wouldn’t have gone this far.”

Sophia’s eyelids drooped, her voice thin and fragile, barely a sigh. “Rachel…”

Rachel said, “I’m right here, Mrs. Westwood. I’ll get the family doctor here to treat you.”

Sophia’s face was drained of color, her words so weak they were almost inaudible. “No… no need. Just call Annabelle, please. Have her come pick me up.”

She wanted to get out of here.

Rachel stared at the fresh bloodstains spreading across Sophia’s nightgown, terrified to even lay a hand on her.

She nodded through tears, choking out. “Okay, I’ll call her right away. Mrs. Westwood, please, just hold on. Stay with me.”

Sophia closed her eyes for a moment, waiting until Rachel’s footsteps faded down the hallway. Biting back the pain, she forced her eyes open and clenched her jaw.

Darkness tried to swallow her vision, but she pushed herself up anyway, dragging her broken body toward the front gate.

Her bones had to be broken. Every tiny movement made her tremble. Passing out wasn’t an option–not if she wanted to get out of here. She had to escape.

Biting back the pain that nearly swallowed her whole, Sophia somehow pushed herself up and, half–crawling, half- staggering, lurched out the door.

Lucas sprinted after her, closing the gap between them with every stride.

“Sophia, come on, just stop! I was wrong. I’m sorry, okay?” he shouted.

Sophia ignored his shouts completely. Right now, only one thing filled her mind–escape, no matter what. She had to get away from here and leave that monster behind her.

Seeing she wouldn’t stop, Lucas’s words turned into a vicious threat. “Don’t you dare run, Sophia. Once I catch you, I’ll make you wish you were dead.”

The gilded gates loomed just ahead. Ignoring the pain wracking her battered body, Sophia hurled herself forward, desperate to break free.

Lucas roared, “Close the gates. Now!”

Hearing his boss’s furious shout, the guard poked his head out of the guard room. He saw Sophia running desperately toward the gate, with Lucas hot on her heels. Without a second thought, he rushed to close the gates.

The electric gates were closing, inching shut right before Sophia’s eyes. At the very last second, desperate and nearly out of hope, she hurled herself toward the narrow opening, determined to make it out before it slammed closed.
