Chapter 98
Sophia stood there, staring blankly at Edmund. ‘Everyone knows one shouldn’t mess with true love, no matter what. So why was Mr. Sterling doing the exact opposite?‘ she wondered.
“Mr. Sterling, I don’t have any intention of getting divorced and remarried,” Sophia said calmly. This marriage had disillusioned her about the whole idea of marriage. She never wanted to trap herself in another intimate relationship that could fall apart at any moment.
“Sophia, you can’t let one bad experience scare you off from love. Just because that Westwood guy was a jerk doesn’t mean there aren’t good men out there. How about you take a look at Richard?” Edmund suggested.
Immediately, Sophia’s mind filled with the image of Richard’s godlike, handsome face. She shook her head vigorously. “No, Mr. Richard Sterling deserves someone better.”
A divorced woman like me shouldn’t even dare to think about him, Sophia thought, feeling a little self–conscious.
On the stairs, Richard’s raised foot froze in mid–air. He squinted at the girl on the sofa, her entire body radiating resistance. Was I really that unimpressive? Look how flustered she was, he thought.
Jason noticed Richard coming down the stairs and cleared his throat loudly. But Edmund and Sophia, sitting on the couch with their backs to the stairs, were completely oblivious to Richard’s arrival.
Edmund teased. “Sophia, you don’t like Richard? Sure, he looks ice–cold, but deep down, he’s got a warm heart.”
Sophia could tell Edmund wasn’t joking. He was actually playing matchmaker for Richard.
She immediately sat up straight in surprise. “Mr. Edmund Sterling, please don’t make fun of me and Mr. Richard Sterling. I wouldn’t even dare to think about him that way.”
She thought, ‘Richard was so amazing, there must already be tons of incredible girls hovering around him.
‘Richard definitely isn’t short of potential wives. Why does Mr. Sterling keep trying to pair me with Richard? Is he hinting at something because he’s noticed we’ve gotten closer lately?‘
Jason caught sight of Richard’s stormy expression and quickly gave a loud cough. “Mr. Sterling, Ms. Evans just brought over some bread. Would you like to give them a try?” Jason said.
As soon as Sophia heard Jason call out “Mr. Sterling,” she automatically got to her feet. She turned and immediately locked eyes with Richard, his soulful gaze making her heart skip a beat.
She let out an awkward laugh. Judging by that look, he definitely heard my talk with Mr. Sterling. I bet just thinking that I might be interested in him is enough to make him want to eat me alive, Sophia thought.
Edmund seemed to really have a thing for those homemade pancakes, reaching for one after another without stopping.
Jason couldn’t take it anymore and gently reminded, “Mr. Sterling, it’s pretty late already. The doctor did say you shouldn’t
overeat.”
Edmund fell silent. He awkwardly set his pancakes down and, as though bestowing some grand favor, slid the plate over to Richard. “You finish the rest. Don’t let Sophie’s thoughtfulness go to waste,” Edmund said.
Before Richard could say anything, Sophia hurriedly chimed in, “It’s fine, Mr. Edmund Sterling. Mr. Richard Sterling probably wouldn’t like the taste. Let me have it instead.”
