Too Pretty to Be Your Backup novel Chapter 104

“What kind of scams are you talking about?”

Travis pressed on. “You get scam calls a lot, right? How do they usually start?”

Marcus paused to think.

He got scam calls all the time.

If it was a number he didn’t recognize, he’d hang up without a second thought.

Still, he knew all the tricks.

“There’s a bunch,” he said. “Like, someone calls and says a family member’s been in an accident and needs money now. Or you get a call about a suspicious package with your name on it, and suddenly you’re in trouble. Sometimes it’s your account being used overseas—maybe for buying weapons or something—and now the cops are after you. Stuff like that.”

There were always new scams popping up.

Travis' face got more serious, his words slow and deliberate. “Are there any scams that start with a marriage certificate?”

“Huh?!” Marcus stared at him, genuinely surprised. “I’ve never heard of anything like that!”

He’d heard of people pretending to get married for money, but a scam involving a marriage certificate itself? That was a first.

Marcus was curious now. “So what happened?”

Travis' eyes were cold, his voice even. “Someone called and said they found a marriage certificate.”

Marcus couldn’t help laughing.

“That’s not how scams start. Scammers want to scare you or get you panicked so you’ll send money. If someone says they found a marriage certificate, it probably just means someone dropped theirs and it got picked up.”

But when he looked at Travis, there was a sudden chill in his eyes. The air seemed to go still.

Marcus’ heart skipped. Why did Travis look like he was about to kill someone?

He thought about how Travis had glanced toward Amanda’s hospital room earlier. Suddenly, it clicked.

“That call wasn’t for Amanda, was it?” he asked.

Travis didn’t say anything, but the look in his eyes said it all.

Marcus grinned. “No way, you don’t really buy that, do you? Amanda, married? To who—wait, is it you? Did you two secretly get married and forget to mention it to me?”

Amanda wanted to marry him?

Marcus looked like he might start banging his head against the wall. Travis was completely clueless when it came to feelings.

He tried to walk him through it.

“Amanda took the call right in front of you, didn’t she?”

“Yeah.”

“And she barely reacted, right?”

“…Yeah.”

“And she told you it was a scam call herself?”

“Yeah.”

“See?” Marcus said, sounding like he’d just won an argument. “She’s dropping hints! You two have tried to have an engagement party twice and it’s fallen apart both times. Of course she’s upset! She’s telling you to forget the engagement party—just get married already!”
