Travis absentmindedly tapped his long fingers on the table, the sound soft and even, betraying nothing.
“So you really think she wanted me to overhear that she got married? To make me anxious, maybe push me into proposing?” he asked, voice casual but with an edge.
Marcus grinned, feeling more convinced by the second. “Absolutely. Come on, who fakes a marriage certificate just for a scam? There are only two possibilities here. One, Amanda actually got married and someone just happened to find her certificate.”
Travis shot that theory down immediately. “No way.”
Who else could Amanda possibly marry, if not him? The idea was ridiculous.
Besides, Travis remembered the moment Amanda got the call. She hadn’t flinched, hadn’t even looked at him. If she really was married, she deserved an Oscar.
Marcus gave him a sly wink, mischief written all over his face. “Why not just check? All it takes is one call and you’ll know if Amanda’s married or not.”
With Travis' connections, checking Amanda’s marital status would be child’s play.
Travis just gave him a confident look. “Is that really necessary?”
Marcus laughed. “Of course not.”
It was obvious—if Amanda was going to marry anyone, it’d be Travis. No question.
“So that leaves option two.” Marcus’ smile turned teasing. “She’s just trying to pressure you into proposing. Still, Travis, you messed up this time. You owe her an explanation.”
Travis' expression tightened as he thought about everything that had happened. He let out a quiet, frustrated sigh. “I had everything planned. She just didn’t trust me.”
Declan’s team was the best in the country, cosisting of elite mercenaries with top-notch gear and training. If Amanda had only gone along with the plan, nothing would’ve happened to her. Leila would have been rescued, too.
