Blowing off Hannah had Amanda in a great mood.
Hannah was always showing off in front of her little clique of fake friends, acting like a queen every time Amanda was around. But today, Amanda didn’t show up. She could just picture Hannah’s face–probably dark with embarrassment. Serves her right for once.
After a quick touch–up and some killer makeup, Amanda headed out to meet Cindy for dinner as the sun dipped low. They’d picked a steakhouse they practically considered their second home.
When Amanda walked in, Cindy was already there, waving eagerly. “Amanda, over here!”
Amanda’s grin was pure sunshine as she rushed over and hugged her tight. “Girl, I missed you so much!”
Cindy rolled her eyes with a teasing smile. “Yeah, right. If Travis hadn’t dragged you back, I’d still be waiting for you to show up.”
Amanda threw up her hands in mock surrender. “Okay, okay, I get it–I’ve learned my lesson. Just don’t bring up Travis, please.”
Laughing, Cindy tugged her into her seat. The banter was just how they rolled. Deep down, Cindy never doubted Amanda would make time for her. Guys come and go, but best friends are forever.
Settled in, Cindy rested her chin in her hand, her big eyes sparkling with curiosity. “So Travis came to get you himself? That was dramatic.”
After their engagement fell apart, Amanda left London without a backward glance. Everyone assumed she was licking her wounds, especially since the rumors about her not being good enough for Travis never seemed to die. He’d called off the engagement party like it was nothing, making it clear she’d never really mattered. To most people, the cancellation was the end of the story.
But then Travis went looking for her, city after city, until he found her. No one knew what to make of it.
Amanda, for her part, couldn’t stand hearing his name. Her head started to pound just thinking about him. “He’s crazy. Seriously, don’t mention him. I’m scared he’s going to haunt me or something.”
Right on cue, her phone buzzed.
“See? I told you not to say his name,” she groaned.
Cindy leaned over and tapped Amanda’s phone, dying to know what Travis wanted now.
Travis: [Dinner at Pretty in half an hour.]
Cindy’s eyes went wide. “Wait. Is he talking about this place? What are the odds?”
Amanda just laughed. “Relax. There’s no way he’s showing up.”
She took a screenshot of Travis‘ message, snapped a selfie and posted both on her social, but set it so only Leila could see.
Yay! Romantic dinner for two. Waiting! [photo] [photo]
She didn’t bother replying to Travis.
