Amanda could feel the way everyone looked at her–eyes brimming with judgment and thinly veiled

sarcasm.

Past the secretaries‘ desks, the vibe only got colder. The executive assistants sat in their usual spots: Fiona typing away, Chad hunched over his monitor. Both glanced up.

“Good morning, Mr. Hill.”

Travis barely nodded, leading Amanda toward his office. But just as they reached the door, he stopped short. Without a word, he spun around and marched straight to Chad’s desk.

“Chad, hand over your work. You’re fired.”

Chad’s face went pale. He shot up, panic all over his voice. “Mr. Hill, did I do something wrong? Please, just give me another chance. I can fix it. I swear, I’ll do better.”

Fiona jumped in, desperate to help. “Mr. Hill, maybe there’s a misunderstanding. I trained Chad myself, and I’ve kept an eye on his work. He’s always done everything perfectly.”

Travis didn’t even flinch. His eyes were cold as ice as he stared Chad down. “If you don’t even know what you did wrong, why should you stay? HR will make sure you get your severance. Pack your things and leave. Now.”

Amanda stood frozen, shock rippling through her. Why would Travis fire Chad out of nowhere?

Then, out of nowhere, a thought hit her.

Was this because of her?

No way.

She quickly shoved the idea aside–it was ridiculous. There was no way Travis would go that far for her. She wasn’t that important. No need to get carried away.

Chad looked totally rattled until his eyes landed on Amanda. Suddenly, something clicked for him, and his stare turned venomous.

“It was you, wasn’t it? You went to Mr. Hill and trashed me behind my back! Amanda, you just had to drag our personal drama into work. How could you be so shameless?”

Amanda’s jaw dropped. How was this her fault? Had Chad lost his mind?

She wasn’t about to just stand there and take it.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why you’re getting fired. Sure you haven’t done anything sketchy lately? And for the record, Travis is the one letting you go. Why are you yelling at me? Or do you just think I’m an easy target?”

But Chad wouldn’t let it go. He was sure this was all Amanda’s doing. Why else would Travis fire him like this? He’d never believe it wasn’t her, not in a million years.

“You bitch-”

Before he could finish, Travis stepped forward and slammed his foot into Chad’s chest.
