Chapter 46
Everything she did was just to get her wandering husband to come home. But guilt and pity only work so many times. After a while, they just stop meaning anything.
The worst time, Travis had a fever that shot up to 106. If the butler hadn’t found him when he did, Travis might not have made it. After that, Travis‘ grandfather found out what was really going on and didn’t hesitate to bring Travis to live with him instead.
Travis was eight then, old enough to understand what was happening–and to remember it. He knew he was just a pawn, something his mother used to hold onto his father. But to his dad, even as the only child, he was never enough to make him quit chasing after other women.
With his grandfather, it was all about expectations. Travis was the only kid, the one everyone was counting on. He grew up with no love, just pressure from every direction. That’s how he ended up so cold and distant.
Feelings were pointless. He’d never been loved and never loved anyone himself.
So why was Amanda different?
Because Amanda was the only one who loved him with no strings attached just for who he was.
He already had money, already had power. What he wanted in a wife was someone who actually cared about him, who looked at him like he was her whole world. Not some business deal.
And Amanda really did love him. She hovered around him, gentle and caring, always watching his mood, always looking out for him. He liked it. He liked being the center of her world.
Amanda loved him enough to do anything. Even drug him if it meant getting closer to him. He didn’t even get mad about it. He just let it happen. She was his first woman. It brought them closer, and he didn’t dwell on how it started.
He never even considered that maybe Amanda wasn’t the one who did it.
He never tried to understand her, never tried to comfort her, never cared about how she felt. All he wanted was her unwavering love.
But now, staring into her calm eyes–eyes that even seemed a little cold–he felt a sudden, sharp ache
in his chest.
And then she said, “I loved the wrong person. That’s on me.”
So she regretted it. She was taking her love back.
Once they got in the car, Travis tried to make it right, “I didn’t eat with you last night. Let’s go today.”
“Mm,” Amanda answered, barely paying attention.
Her phone rang. Travis glanced at the screen: Shane.
“Hey, Shane,” Amanda said. “Okay, I’ll be right there.” She hung up and turned to Travis. “Something came up at school. I have to go.”
She reached for the door.
