Just hearing Amanda’s name was enough to get him all worked up.
Ha! Now that was entertaining.
Marcus had known for ages that Travis felt something different for Amanda. Travis wasn’t the type to let just anyone into his life, especially not a woman he called his own. Everything and everyone around him was always under his control. If a woman got close, it was never by accident.
But Travis grew up in his own strange, lonely world. He never really knew what love felt like, and he certainly didn’t know how to show it. Maybe he didn’t even realize how much Amanda meant to him until it was too late—until she’d already given up.
Marcus gave Travis a long, meaningful look.
“Travis, girls need lots of love and care. You have to let her feel how much you love her. She gave you the kind of pure, burning, fearless love most people only dream about. What did you give her in return? Anyone would get tired eventually—especially after seven years.”
Honestly, Marcus had a lot of respect for Amanda. Sticking with a guy as cold as Travis for seven years? If that wasn’t real love, he didn’t know what was.
And as for how she gave up so suddenly? It was never sudden. It was every letdown, every disappointment, every heartbreak piled on top of each other, year after year.
Marcus finished what he had to say and left. This was between Travis and Amanda. He was just someone watching from the sidelines. Still, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for Travis and the childhood he’d never really escaped. Marcus hoped someone could come along and love Travis for real, and he really didn’t want to see him lose that chance.
He stepped out and quietly closed the hospital room door behind him.
Travis stared at the closed door, his face as calm as ever—but his mind was a thousand miles away.

The next morning, Amanda slept in until ten. She rolled out of bed, washed up, yawned, and stretched before heading downstairs. But the second she opened her bedroom door, she stopped in her tracks.
The entire living room was packed with boxes—every size, every color. A whole lineup of luxury store staff stood in a neat row, looking like they were ready for a royal inspection.
As soon as they saw her, they all bowed.
“Good morning, Ms. Tully.”
Amanda nearly tripped over her own feet.
She had no idea what was going on, so she turned to Michelle for help.
