After that, his grandfather sat him down and told him something unexpected. Their families had actually arranged a childhood engagement between him and Amanda. They were supposed to get married.
But Grandpa didn’t just spring it on him. He asked Travis what he wanted first. If Travis said yes, they’d move forward. If not, the whole thing would be scrapped, no hard feelings.
Back then, Travis told him he needed two years to think about it. He wanted to see what Amanda was really like. If she could pass his test, he’d agree.
Grandpa asked what kind of standard he had in mind.
Travis just shrugged and answered with two words: “No trouble.”
If Amanda turned out to be a hassle, then forget it. If she wasn’t, then maybe they could talk.
Turns out, Amanda did great during those two years. She had her childish moments, sure, but she always handled things herself. She never made her problems his problems.
He was honestly impressed with her.
Then, on Amanda’s twentieth birthday, she made a wish. She said she wanted to be his girlfriend. He said yes.
He could still see her bouncing with happiness, her face lit up with a smile she just couldn’t hide. Her eyes were overflowing with love.
Travis leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes, letting out a deep breath before saying quietly, “Yeah. I like her.”
Love? He wasn’t sure about that. But he knew, for certain, he felt something for Amanda.
Mateo stared at him, completely shocked.
This was Travis, saying it out loud. That almost never happened.
He liked Amanda. That was… unbelievable.
Mateo suddenly felt a little sorry for the guy.
