Chapter 56 I Just Want You
From the backseat of the passing white car, Madeline lowered the window and called out, “Desmond!”
Autumn sat beside her, watching in silence.
Desmond had heard Madeline. In fact, he had seen her too.

But he acted like she didn’t exist, his gaze turning cold, almost unsettling.
Beatrice reminded him, “Madeline’s there. She’s calling you. Didn’t you hear her?”
But he didn’t react at all.
Madeline watched as the car drove farther away. Furious, she yelled for them to stop, yanked the door open, and jumped out, chasing after them while frantically calling Desmond’s phone.
She ran all the way to the entrance gates, screaming after the disappearing car like a madwoman.
People passing by shot her wary glances, some even whispering amongst themselves.
Autumn, still in the car, neither told the driver to leave nor got out to check on Madeline. She just sat there, motionless, her expression as lifeless as still water.

The distant sounds of screaming and hysteria barely registered in her ears, and she remained completely indifferent.
Henry Garcia, the Belmont family’s driver, glanced at the rearview mirror, confused.
He didn’t understand why Autumn agreed to let Madeline come to Belmont Manor today and even picked herself up. Autumn knew full well that Beatrice was coming, after all.
Meanwhile, Desmond’s car had vanished from sight.
Seeing that, Madeline collapsed onto the side of the road, her eyes locked on the barely visible black speck in the distance, filled with twisted jealousy and near–maniacal resentment.
I’m going to tear Beatrice apart! I went through hell just to keep Desmond by my side for a few days, and now he’s back with Beatrice?
They went home together, and they even left together now… They really look like they’re getting back together…
No! I won’t let that happen! Desmond is mine. I have to take him back!

Not far away, near the roadside trees, an inconspicuous black SUV quietly tailed Desmond’s car.
Three minutes later, Damian got a new voice
message.

“Ms. Lawson has been taken away by her husband. I’m still tailing them. Do you want me to intercept the car and get her out?”

Hearing that Beatrice had been taken, Damian frowned. He mulled it over for a few seconds before replying: [Keep following them.]
He figured it was the safest option for now.
Desmond’s mental state was uncertain, and stopping him by force could be risky.
A moment later, Damian got an “OK” emoji in response.

On the highway, Beatrice saw the speedometer creeping toward 140, with no sign of slowing down.
Panic tightened her chest as she grabbed onto her seatbelt and tried reasoning with Desmond.
“Can you slow down a little?” she asked, keeping her voice as calm as possible.
Desmond didn’t even glance at her, his expression unreadable as he stared straight ahead. “You scared? I thought nothing fazed you.”
In her mind, Beatrice had already cursed him furiously. But no

matter how furious she was, she wasn’t about to pick a fight in this situation.
So instead, she forced an awkward smile and tried to talk him
down.
“I’ve only got one life, and I’d like to keep it. You should, too. Life is long. Things pass, and people move on. No need to get worked up, and definitely no need to be reckless.”
Without warning, Desmond yanked the wheel, swerving off the straight highway onto a narrow side road.
Her heart nearly jumped out of her throat.
Forcing herself to stay calm, Beatrice glanced out the window.
The road was barely wide enough for two cars to pass each other, lined with towering trees on both sides. The sky was growing darker by the second.
It was already dusk. Combined with the tense, almost eerie atmosphere, it made the man beside her feel like a stranger, as if something sinister had taken hold of him..
“Can I at least know where we’re going?” Beatrice asked carefully.
Desmond’s answer was flat. “No idea.”
Silence stretched between them for five minutes before Beatrice spoke again, “You know, we don’t actually have some deep

hatred between us. You just happened to make the mistake most men would, and I’m just a woman who happens to be a little stubborn.”
“We were deep in love once. It just faded over time, and it’s time. we broke up. I don’t blame you anymore, and you don’t need to blame me either.”
Desmond turned his head slightly to look at her. “You’re really scared of dying, aren’t you?”
Beatrice’s grip on her seatbelt tightened instinctively.
What the hell did he mean by that? Is he mad because I insisted on the divorce, or is it because I threatened to take him to court and release that damning recording of him and Madeline? Did that push him over the edge?
Beatrice’s mind raced, trying to figure out who to call for help.
Strangely, the first name that popped into her head wasn’t the police. It was Damian. That man who always seemed capable of anything.
But on second thought, she realized that he couldn’t possibly keep saving her time and time again.
Desmond must’ve noticed Beatrice zoning out because something in him snapped.
His voice came sharp and accusing. “Who are you thinking about?”

Beatrice shot him a look. “I was thinking about when you’re finally going to pull over. If you keep driving like this, we’ll run out of gas. Then how the hell are we supposed to get back?”
She deliberately steered the conversation toward something. mundane.
Desmond didn’t say another word.
Beatrice then quietly reached into her bag.
The phone he had taken from her was a new one, but all the important things were stored in her old phone, so she hadn’t bothered to snatch it back. Besides, she still had a backup phone in her pocket.
Once Beatrice got her hands on her other phone, she didn’t ask Damian for help. Instead, she sent her pinned contact, Violet, her location every five minutes.
She also tried to send a message, but Beatrice wasn’t good at typing blind, so she had no idea how badly she’d butchered her words.
Last time, she had meant to text Gordon for help but had somehow ended up sending him “helo” instead,
