Chapter 61 Selfishness

HaAfter a long moment, all that escaped Beatrice’s throat was a small laugh. She seemed too stunned to even speak.

Scarlett, still waiting for a response on the other end of the line, gasped.

You’re laughing? How the hell can you laugh right now? The Belmont family just smeared your name to make Madeline look clean! Are you seriously going to take that?

Where’s that fire you had at the charity gala? Hit back and shut them up! Go destroy these f**king as**oles!

She was dropping fbombs now.

This was coming from Scarlett, Cloudia’s premier socialite who always maintained her sweet, elegant demeanor and spoke with that soft, refined accent.

Beatrice laughed bitterly. Aren’t you worried it might all be true? They’ve got so much evidence laid out.

That’s complete bullsh*t!Scarlett fired back.

I’d bet my life that you’re not that kind of person, Beatrice! Everyone in our circle knows what Madeline is really like. I used to think Desmond was quite the catch. He’s sexy, handsome, and devoted.

I was even jealous of you. But ever since he got mixed up with Madeline? It’s like he fell into a cesspool. The stench is unbearable. His whole goldenboy image has completely crashed and burned.

And what’s this about an engagement arranged ten years ago? Good lord, why don’t they just claim that they were married in a past life while they’re at it?

Scarlett continued her furious rant, her words dripping with disgust.

She’d met Beatrice when Beatrice and Desmond were still inseparable. Back then, Desmond treated Beatrice like she was his whole world.

They weren’t exactly best friends at the timemore like acquaintances who occasionally helped each other out,

swapping favors and stuff. Whenever they met up, they’d put on this super friendly act, but you could tell their connection was pretty shallow.

When Scarlett’s life fell apart and she hit rock bottom, everyone just avoided her like she was some plague. Her socalled besties and relatives kept ignoring her cries for help. Some even used the opportunity to push her around.

That was when Beatrice stepped up and offered her a hand.

Scarlett would never forget sitting in the snow, calling number after number with no one picking up, feeling completely lost.

She’d gone through her entire contact list in a daze, empty and numb, even considering taking her own life.

Scarlett couldn’t even remember when she’d called Beatrice, but she was grateful that Beatrice didn’t hang up or brush her off. Instead, she’d patiently listened and promised to help.

At this point, whether she could actually help didn’t really

matter anymore

The person who offered help during her darkest hour was always worth trusting.

Beatrice just let Scarlett vent without saying much in response.

Scarlett grew impatient. Why aren’t you saying anything? If you’re scared of them, I’ll expose them myself!

Don’t mess with them!Beatrice quickly jumped in.

She let out a heavy sigh. I can handle this myself. Thanks for standing up for me. Believe me, that’s enough.

Her situation had already dragged her parents into trouble, along with Violet and Damian. She couldn’t bear to involve anyone else.

Hearing that, Scarlett opened her mouth, trying to continue.

She wanted to insist that she could help, but her courage failed her.

Chapter 61 Selfishness

What could she possibly do against the Belmont and Fairfax families anyway? She wasn’t that powerful.

Look at you being all smart, she huffed. You won’t even let people help when they’re begging to be useful.

Beatrice just laughed. I appreciate the thought, but you’re better off watching from the sidelines.

You’re being stupid as hell. I’m done with you.

With that, Scarlett hung up.

The lighthearted front Beatrice had been putting on crumbled the moment she put down the phone.

For the next hour, she was bombarded with tons of calls.

She felt lucky that none of the calls were from her parents. They probably didn’t know about this mess yet, but they would find out sooner or later

The thought of seeing the hurt in their eyes made her stomach.

twist.

Beatrice clenched her fists in frustration.

First, she hated herself for not listening to them back then.

Second, she hated how love had completely clouded her judgment.

Third, she regretted everything so much that she’d restart it all if that was possible.

While the whole world was blowing up like a dumpster fire, Desmond had just woken up in his hotel bed, hungover as hell.

He hadn’t gone home, his phone was dead, and he hadn’t shown up at the office.

The entire Summit Group was in an uproar over what had happened, and he had absolutely no clue.

When Roland finally tracked him down and filled him in, it hit

him like a truck.

Meanwhile, Damian attended a business lunch that day.

As he was leaving the restaurant and sliding into his car, Killian handed him the juicy gossip he’d spotted all because it involved.

Beatrice.

He read through everything with a stonecold poker face. His expression didn’t change, but the chill radiating off him was unmistakable.

Since the Belmont family and the Fairfax family are so loveydovey now, I’m sure they won’t be hurting for cash anytime soon,he said casually. Let’s cancel all their project loan applications.

His words came out light and casual, but his tone carried a rare. killer edge.

We’ve already released the first payment, and the second one is about to go out. If we cut them off now, their cash flow could collapse and turn the whole project into a disaster.Killian pointed out.

They’re tougher than you think. This is Desmond and

Madeline’s lovechild project. They’d sell their kidneys and bleed themselves dry to keep the money flowing. I have faith in them,Damian replied coolly.

Killian’s palms were sweating bullets as he remained silent. He realized that Damian got so vengeful probably for Beatrice’s sake.

His concern was that Damian had just returned to take over the company, and this project loan had been approved before he arrived. The vice president, Dylan Thomas, had been involved with it.

All the relationship management had surely been handled properly. If Damian pulled the plug now, Dylan and his lackeys would see it as a direct attack on them.

But whatever Killian said wouldn’t make a difference. Damian had clearly made up his mind.

On the drive back to the office from the restaurant, he issued his instructions for a complete reevaluation. His stated reason was that the recent PR nightmare surrounding the project company
