She approached the bed and stopped about three feet away, her voice full of concern as she asked, “Mr. Crowley, how’s your injury?”
Her tone was respectful, showing the gratitude she felt for the man who had saved her life.
But after she asked, Damian didn’t even acknowledge her.
Beatrice froze, unsure of what to do, and could only stand there in silence, waiting for him to speak.
Damian was engrossed in his book, his lashes casting a shadow over his eyes. From the moment she knocked to now, he hadn’t lifted his gaze even once.
About a minute passed.
He slowly turned the page, his movements smooth and deliberate. “Ms. Lawson, don’t you think your concern is a little late?”
His voice, cool and nonchalant, drifted through the quiet room.
Beatrice’s smile, which was already tight, became even more awkward, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that Damian was getting irritated.

She reacted quickly, explaining, “I’ve wanted to come see you for a while, but with so many people visiting at the hospital, I was worried that my sudden appearance might lead to rumors. That’s why I thought I’d wait until you were discharged.”
“Rumors?” Damian’s eyes shifted toward her, sharp and penetrating. “What makes you think that the moment you show up, people will assume there’s something improper between us?”
Beatrice was momentarily stunned.
His words weren’t exactly direct, but she understood the message loud and clear.
He was mocking her, suggesting she thought too highly of herself, as if she believed her charm was irresistible. In reality, she was nothing to him.

Her throat felt tight and uncomfortable as she managed to go. on, “Sorry, I overthought things. It won’t happen again. I’ll let you get back to your reading now.”
With that, she awkwardly backed out of the room, nearly stumbling into the doorframe in her haste.
Damian watched the door as it closed behind her.
After a long pause, he shut his book with a snap, tossing it aside. Leaning back on the bed, he rubbed his forehead, his eyes. shutting in frustration.
A bitter laugh escaped his lips.
“So childish.” He murmured.

Beatrice hurried out of the bedroom, heading for the door.
“Already leaving?” Gordon was surprised as he rushed over from the living room.
“Mr. Crowley’s reading, so I didn’t want to disturb him. I’ll head out now, Gordon,” Beatrice spoke quickly, forcing a smile, but it was so awkward that it might have been better if she hadn’t tried.

Gordon didn’t stop her, just telling her to visit again when she had time.
As Beatrice left in a hurry, Gordon sighed quietly.
When Damian came downstairs for dinner, Gordon, while serving him soup, mumbled almost to himself, “She was practically in tears when she left. She’s probably going to cry when she gets home.”
Damian put down his fork, his expression unreadable as he looked at Gordon. “What’s your point?”
Gordon quickly shook his head. “I’m just saying… You’ve done so much for her, but you’re still letting her leave all upset? You really want to make her cry like that?”
Damian paused, then picked up his fork again.
But before he could take a bite, he hesitated. Finally, he asked, “She really cried?”
Gordon raised an eyebrow. “Why don’t you go downstairs and see for yourself?”
Damian didn’t respond, his face still emotionless.
He stood up, leaving his food untouched, and headed toward the bedroom. “What’s the point of all your talking?”

Meanwhile, Beatrice sat on the couch, hugging a cushion and lost in thought, occasionally sighing in frustration.
The feeling of floating on air when she first learned that Damian had taken on the Fairfax family for her, looking out for her, had completely faded.
In hindsight, she realized how foolish she’d been.
Damian had helped her and protected her, but that didn’t make them equals.
He was her superior. He could be kind and courteous, even gentlemanly, but he could also be cold, sharp, and prideful, especially if she said something that crossed a line.
If she let that hurt her, it would only show that she hadn’t known her place.
She reminded herself to stay grounded.
Beatrice couldn’t mistake his occasional kindness for friendship, and she definitely couldn’t let herself believe he might be
interested in her.
After taking an hour to clear her head, she got up and made herself something to eat.

She hadn’t eaten much when her phone rang.
Seeing that it was Gordon calling, she felt a slight pressure.
Most of the time, he was just passing along messages from Damian.
She picked up the phone. “Hello, Gordon.”
“Ms. Lawson, are you free tonight?”
“Uh…”
