Chapter 78 Overestimating Desmond

Maria’s expression turned serious, and David immediately knew he couldn’t dodge the question anymore. He let out a little chuckle and pulled her toward the side garden.
“You really are sharp, huh?” he teased. “Alright, I’ll be blunt. If Damian is really into Ms. Lawson, would you be okay with it?”
Maria went silent, her thoughts swirling.
If it were someone else’s son, she might have shrugged it off, saying it didn’t matter if the girl was divorced. But this was her
own son.
She didn’t meddle much in her son’s love life. As long as the girl had good character, a clean family background, and Damian was genuinely happy with her, she wouldn’t be too picky about social
status.
But of course, it’d be better if they were a good match.
“Wasn’t it you who said before that as long as she’s a woman, and, you know, alive, it’s fine?” David grinned, clearly enjoying her discomfort.
Maria swatted him on the arm, half–annoyed, half–amused. “Who doesn’t want their kid to marry well?”

Realizing she might’ve come off a bit too strong, she quickly added, “I’m not saying Ms. Lawson’s a bad person. I’ve heard about her. Gordon even talked to me about her. She’s had at rough time, but she’s a great woman. Just… unlucky in love. I really hope she finds happiness with whoever comes next.”
David raised an eyebrow. “So, just not with Damian, huh?”

Maria sighed in exasperation, “Alright, fine! I’m not as understanding as I should be. I’m selfish. I admit it. Happy now? It’s not like what you’re saying is going to change anything. Damian’s our firstborn. He’s the heir to the family. There are so many eyes on him. One wrong step and the whole family will make a big deal out of it. And let’s not even talk about mother. Do you really think she’s going to just let it go? We can’t ignore all that, can we?”
your
David sighed, rubbing his temples, “Yeah, he’s the face of the Crowley family. Can’t afford to be reckless.”
He then patted her on the shoulder with a smile. “But hey, don’t worry too much. All this is just our wild guessing. Maybe we’re overthinking it. Didn’t you arrange a few blind dates for Damian? Let him go meet some people.”
Maria nodded, but in her heart, she wasn’t as optimistic as he
was.
Desmond had Damian’s number, and he’d even followed him on

So when he woke up with a brutal hangover the next morning, the first thing he saw was the post about the strawberry mousse
cake.
His blood boiled as the cake, the brand, and the flavor were all Beatrice’s favorite.
Suddenly, the memory of their divorce hit him. They’d signed the papers just yesterday. She wasn’t his wife anymore, and he’d lost her forever.
The emptiness in his chest was suffocating, but the sting of that strawberry cake felt like a knife twisting deeper. Just divorced, and she’s already moving on to Damian?
Yesterday’s conversation suddenly felt like a lie. The jealousy burned through him, his thoughts racing in a whirlwind of anger. He grabbed his phone, using a new number to call Beatrice. Since she’d blocked him everywhere, this was his only way of reaching her.
Beatrice was sitting in the passenger seat as the car rolled into the underground garage of NobleQuest Group.
Her phone vibrated. Unknown number.
God, please don’t be Desmond.
We’re divorced now, and he seemed okay with it. It’s probably not him.

“Hello?” she answered cautiously.”

You really kept your word, didn’t you? Beatrice, you’re an expert at pretending! Why didn’t you keep it up a little longer? Why rush into Damian’s arms right after the divorce…”
Desmond’s icy anger echoed in her ear.
Without a second thought, Beatrice hung up the call.
She rubbed her forehead, feeling a wave of exhaustion. Clearly, she had overestimated Desmond.
Both Damian and Killian heard the raised voices on the other end, especially the word “divorce.”
Killian blinked, surprised. Are they really divorced?
Damian, on the other hand, was calm. He already knew they’d finalized their divorce the day before.
The car grew quiet, and there was an awkward tension hanging.
in the air.
Beatrice turned her head, staring out the window.
Thankfully, they had reached the parking garage.
She followed Damian into the private elevator, eager to put

some distance between herself and the awkwardness of the
moment.

Killian then led her through the maze of hallways, guiding her to HR, where she completed the usual paperwork, got her access card, and then gave her a quick tour of the building. He pointed. out the different departments, the floors they worked on, and the executive levels. After all, she’d be working closely with these people.
The office was buzzing with gossip about Beatrice joining the team. Everyone knew Damian had spent months searching for the perfect secretary, and now he finally got one.
The story spread fast–she was a former project manager al Summit Group, headhunted specifically for NobleQuest. But what really got people talking was her connection to Summit’s CEO. She was his ex, and their breakup had been major news. Now here she was, crossing over to their side.
Her dramatic switch to NobleQuest was already gossip–worthy, but then came the scandal with the Fairfax and Belmont
families.
When Damian froze Fairfax Group’s loans and publicly called them out, everyone knew he was defending her. It was unprecedented–the boss taking such a clear stand for a new employee.
Now all eyes were on Beatrice, watching how quickly she’d earned Damian’s protection. But seeing her in person, it all made sense. She was breathtaking, turning heads wherever she

Tall and graceful, she wore her business attire like a runway model, walking the perfect line between professional and stunning. Her features were striking–high cheekbones, glowing skin, and a presence that commanded attention.
When she smiled, her eyes lit up with a sparkle that could make anyone’s heart skip. She wasn’t cute or girl–next–door–she was magnetic, the type of woman who made you forget what you were saying mid–sentence.
“Whoever said Mr. Crowley likes men clearly doesn’t get it,” one guy whispered, watching her walk by.
“Seriously, how could her husband walk away from a woman like that? If I were him, I wouldn’t leave her alone for a second.”
The two guys were talking low enough, but they still kept their eyes on Beatrice as she walked off with Killian.
Nearby, two women overheard them, rolling their eyes in disgust.
“Give it a break, guys. Men are all the same. They get bored of their wives, no matter how beautiful they are. They’ll always go looking for something else.”
“Yep, men are just wired to think with their lower halves.”
