Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 217

Lately, Nora hadn’t really paid much attention to Daniel.

By the time he got home, she was already asleep; when he left in the morning, she hadn’t woken up yet.

The two of them had barely even seen each other, let alone spoken face to face.

Not that it mattered.

Their relationship had always been a business arrangement.

“Eleanor, that’s enough.” Daniel’s voice dropped into a stern register.

Eleanor’s voice trembled as she choked back tears. “I get that you want to keep this from her, but someone has to look after you. All I did was hand you a glass of water, and she got angry. She doesn’t deserve your kindness.”

“Eleanor.” Daniel’s tone sharpened. “Leave.”

Eleanor stamped her foot in frustration, then ran from the room.

Will followed her out and closed the door gently behind him.

Nora hesitated, then walked over to the hospital bed and asked, “Anywhere else you feel unwell?”

Daniel’s calm expression shifted, shadows flickering across his face. “I’m fine.”

He tried to explain, “Eleanor just cares about me, that’s why she came to the hospital. She can be blunt, but don’t take it personally.”

Nora lowered her gaze. “You don’t need to explain. If there’s nothing else, I’ll go.”

She turned to leave.

“Nora.” There was a raw ache in Daniel’s voice as he blurted, “Did you rush over because you were worried about me, or were you just afraid Payne’s treatment would be delayed?”

Nora couldn’t tell herself, either, how much of her concern was for him.

She looked at him quietly. His pale face was drawn and tired.

“Does it make a difference?”

Daniel looked as if he’d just taken a blow—his eyes dulled, all the fight gone from them.

Nora almost laughed. “You keep secrets from me, say it’s to keep me from worrying, but then expect me to worry about you anyway.”

After three years in the Quinn family, Nora had seen all of Eleanor’s tricks.

Will shook his head. He’d only wanted to give Mr. Chambers and his wife a chance to spend more time together.

“Take care of him,” Nora said quietly, bidding Will goodbye and heading down the corridor.

She hadn’t gone far when she ran into Eleanor, who was talking with a doctor.

Eleanor strode over, dressed impeccably in a business suit, her straight hair cascading over her shoulders.

Nora walked right past her without missing a beat.

Eleanor stopped, her tone edged with challenge. “Nora, how much patience do you think he has left for you?”

Nora met her gaze, unruffled. “If you were really that capable, you’d have helped your friend take my place a long time ago. Too bad she failed.”

Eleanor’s expression twisted with anger.

Monica had already been forced out of the country by Hans.
