Mrs. Chambers had also been taken to the family estate by Mr. Hogan Chambers. Even when Nora called to tell her that Daniel had fainted, she wasn’t allowed to leave.
Eleanor realized she had underestimated Nora.
No—that wasn’t it. She’d underestimated the sway Nora held over Daniel.
“Nora, don’t get ahead of yourself. Even if he likes you now, you’ll never take Mrs. Chambers’ place.”
Nora’s lips curled into a faint, scornful smile. “That’s not a position I ever wanted.”
She turned on her heel and walked away.
Eleanor’s eyes darkened with malice.
When Nora returned to North Manor, she had barely stepped through the door when a housekeeper appeared, rolling her suitcase toward her.
Moments later, Will and the driver arrived in the foyer.
Will directed the driver to load her luggage into the car before turning to Nora. “Mr. Chambers would like you to stay at the hospital with him.”
Nora wasn’t interested. “I’m pregnant. I need to rest.”
Besides, Eleanor was already with him—why drag her into this mess?
Will remained impeccably polite. “Everything’s been arranged at the hospital. You won’t be overexerted.”
Nora knew refusal was pointless.
Seething, she climbed into the car. Typical—Daniel never missed a chance to complicate her life.
An hour later, she was back at the hospital, standing in front of Daniel once again.
He was propped up against the headboard, a stack of neatly organized documents at his side.
When he looked up, his gaze was cool and impassive.
Her suitcase was left by the wall. Will quietly excused himself.
Nora’s displeasure was plain. “I could have hired a nurse for you, you know.”
After all, he was just a little weak—hardly at death’s door. He didn’t need anyone babysitting him.
“I can take care of myself. There’s no need.”
“Then why am I here?” Nora’s tone was sharp with annoyance.
“To bring me luck.” Daniel’s voice was flat as he nodded toward the suitcase. “I had the staff pack for you. See if there’s anything missing. If there is, I’ll have it sent over.”
Nora folded her arms, unmoving. Her voice was cool. “How long am I expected to stay?”
“As long as I’m here, you’re here.”
“I’m pregnant,” she protested. “Hospitals aren’t exactly comfortable for me.”
He was just about to slip out of bed when someone burst into the room.
“Dan!”
The voice was loud.
Daniel frowned instantly and shot a glare at the intruder. “Keep it down.”
Samuel’s eyes immediately landed on the unmistakable lump on the other side of the bed.
That had to be Nora, right?
Daniel got out of bed, his gaze frosty. “Aurora’s sleeping. Let’s talk outside.”
Samuel’s chest tightened—yep, it was Nora.
He stepped out into the hallway, thoroughly irritated.
“What’s she doing here?”
Daniel only frowned. “What do you want?”
Samuel set aside his annoyance about Nora’s presence and got straight to the point. “Dan, there’s trouble at the company. I need your help.”
Daniel wasn’t surprised. Trouble at the Quinn Group had always been a matter of time.
