Daniel barely slept a wink that night. He wished, desperately, that time would simply stop, so Nora could stay by his side just a little longer.
Only when the sky began to pale did exhaustion finally overtake him.
He must have dozed for half an hour when he jolted awake, heart pounding.
His arms were empty. Nora was gone.
“Aurora.”
He scrambled out of bed, panic rising in his chest.
His gaze darted around the room and landed on the bathroom door.
Without bothering to put on his shoes, he rushed over and shoved the door. It swung open, and he nearly stumbled as he burst inside.
“Aurora!”
Nora was lying on the floor, blood streaming from her left wrist.
She had tried to take her own life.
At eight in the morning, Nora was wheeled out of the emergency room.
She’d been found in time. She was out of danger.
Daniel spent an hour on the hospital stairwell, chain-smoking, looking utterly wrecked. Spent cigarette butts littered the floor at his feet.
He didn't move until the doctor called to tell him Nora was stable.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket and made his way to the hospital room.
Hans was there too, sitting in a wheelchair, still weak and pale.
“She… was it because of Una?” Hans’s voice was husky.
Daniel didn’t answer, but the pain in his eyes said everything.
“Take her back to the Cooper family,” Hans said quietly.
The words hit Daniel like a punch to the chest. He clenched his fists, struggling to keep his emotions in check.
Better to entrust Nora to Hans than to Louis.
Hans’s voice rasped with exhaustion. “Alright.”
He understood what had happened with Una, and he agreed with Daniel’s decision.
They both believed that a clean break, however painful, was better than endless suffering.
Neither of them had expected that Nora’s feelings for Una ran so deep.
Longing and sorrow surged in his eyes.
“What happened to Aurora? Who hurt her?” Mrs. Cooper spotted the bandage on Nora’s wrist and her face darkened with rage.
She’d rushed back from overseas after hearing Hans and David had been hurt, only to discover along the way that her missing granddaughter had been found at last.
There hadn’t been time to learn what Nora had endured.
“Grandma, let Aurora rest,” Hans urged gently.
Mrs. Cooper nodded quickly, her voice softening. “Yes, yes, let her rest. But whoever hurt her— I won’t let them get away with it…”
Daniel slipped out of the room.
Nora had family again—people who would love and protect her. There was no longer any place for him by her side.
His heart ached bitterly, but for her sake, he was willing to let her go.
From now on, their paths would part for good.
Back in his car, he slumped against the seat, covering his eyes with his hand. The tears came hot and fast, soaking his palm.
He’d fought so hard to hold on. In the end, it had all been nothing but a hopeless dream.
