A few days ago, Drusilla had boldly confessed her feelings for Enoch, and now, she’s acting like total strangers, huh? Well, two can play at that game. He wasn't in any rush; he'd just sit back and wait for her to come crawling back to him.
Lying in bed, Enoch pulled the covers up and decided to call it a night, no more words.
On the other side of the room, Drusilla sat quietly, her phone in hand, lost in an ebook. Colton and Cormac must have been fast asleep by now.
...
After binge-reading for over two hours, it was nearly 2 a.m. when Drusilla's phone rang. It was Verena on the line.
"Drusilla, I just finished my work and left. How's everyone doing? Should I come pick up Colton and Cormac now?"
Drusilla, already feeling the weight of the late hour, glanced at the time, realizing how late it was. This late-night run would mean Verena wouldn’t get any sleep tonight.
Turning her head, she checked on Enoch, who seemed to be asleep, then quietly stepped into the bathroom to talk, whispering, "You should head back to bed. It's way too late for you to be running around."
"Are you guys back home yet?" Verena asked.
"No, they've all gone to bed. Pick them up from school tomorrow."
They were spending the night here, the kids included, who were probably deep in their dreams by now. It wouldn't be right to wake them up. It made more sense to let them stay over, especially since they had school tomorrow.
Drusilla wasn’t blind; she could tell that both Lilith and Blythe had been nothing but sweet to the kids. There was no intention of going against Verena's wishes by bringing the kids over, so there was no need for panic.
"Alright then, I'm heading off to bed."
Verena sounded utterly exhausted.
Drusilla, hearing the relief in her voice, couldn’t help but smile. That silly girl, running herself ragged, yet when it came to Colton and Cormac, she’d move mountains.
Remembering their argument from the night before, Drusilla felt a twinge of guilt.
His repeated refusals were a clear sign of his inner turmoil, unable to voice how Drusilla’s earlier rejection had kept him awake.
Seeing him dismiss her offers, Drusilla sighed, "Well, let me know if you need anything. I'm off to bed."
With that, she settled herself on the couch.
Enoch was surprised to see her staying over, and even more so by how quickly she fell asleep in his room. Here he was, fuming and unable to sleep, and there she was, out like a light in under ten minutes.
Lying in bed, he could hear her steady breathing as she slept. Looking over at her, a mocking laugh escaped him.
She had the nerve to sleep peacefully after riling him up like this?
Reaching for the remote, Enoch decided to turn the tables, lowering the room's temperature just a notch.
