In the bustling household of the Taylors, Drusilla often felt like she was at the bottom of the totem pole. Everyone seemed to look down on her, but in front of the kids, she strove to maintain a shred of dignity.
"That's not too much to ask for, right?" she said, her voice tinged with a deliberate hint of sadness. She wasn't entirely sure if Enoch would buy into her hastily concocted excuse.
Fortunately, Enoch seemed to take her words to heart. "I've told you before, I won't let anyone bully you in this family. What's this? Have Harlan and Lilith been giving you trouble?" he asked with a protective edge to his voice.
Drusilla was caught off guard. She had fabricated an excuse, not expecting Enoch to take it so seriously. She knew he had always been protective of her!
Lilith's displeasure stemmed entirely from Harlan. The two were married, an unchangeable fact known to all.
"No," she replied quietly.
Enoch's gaze lingered on her. "You don't have to cover for them. If they've been disrespectful, I'll have words with them."
His protective stance was almost overwhelming. Drusilla felt a twinge of guilt for her deception. Surely, he wouldn't confront Harlan and Lilith because of her offhand remark, would he?
While she harbored resentment towards Harlan and wouldn't mind Enoch taking her side, Lilith was a different story altogether.
"Enoch," Drusilla ventured, "Aren't you worried about upsetting her father if you confront Lilith?"
Enoch simply replied, "Kendrick and I have a good relationship."
"But even between brothers, there are lines you don't cross. How he disciplines his child is his business. If you overstep, it could strain your relationship," she cautioned. The last thing she wanted was to be the cause of family discord.
