If Drusilla moved away, she'd cut ties with Harlan and the Taylor family... Suddenly, innocence and rumors seemed trivial.
Serge couldn't wrap his head around her drastic change. Looking at Drusilla, he tried to read something, anything, in her eyes but found them inscrutable.
"Dr. Denton." It was then Lilith's voice shattered the silence between them. She rushed over to Serge's side and asked, "When did you get here?"
Serge replied with a smile, "Just now. Your uncle asked me to drop by for a bit. Wait, what did you just call me?"
Serge gave Lilith a mock-threatening look.
"You're Dr. Denton, aren't you? What's wrong with that?"
"Respect your elders."
"Do I have to call you uncle to make you happy?" Lilith chuckled, her gaze shifting to Drusilla, suddenly wary. "What were you two chatting about?"
Since when had Drusilla become so chummy with Serge, her uncle's friend?
Hearing Lilith's question, Serge said, "Nothing much, just a casual chat. What's the big deal?"
Lilith stepped forward, distancing Serge from Drusilla. "You don't know, this woman is trouble. Stay away from her."
"She's trouble? What kind of trouble? Isn't she your aunt-in-law?"
He tried to reason with Lilith, "People love to gossip. You shouldn't believe everything you hear. If your uncle married her, he must see something in her."
"I'm not just believing rumors! Her ex-husband is my husband! You've met Harlan; he's a good man and doesn't lie. But her... Look, you've just met her, and you're already defending her! You don't even believe what I'm telling you!"
Only then did Serge grasp the complicated relationship between Lilith and Drusilla.
No wonder Lilith was so vehement!
Women, when they clash, always stir up some drama.
He told Lilith, "Go on with your day. I should be heading back. Got some things to handle."
