Drusilla was firm in her words, her eyes blazing with a determination that made Harlan take a step back.
"Are you serious?" he asked, disbelief coloring his tone.
In his world, women were practically throwing themselves at him—what made her think she could stand so tall?
"Dead serious. So, keep your hands to yourself, or I can't promise I won't spill the beans to Lilith," she warned.
A smirk tugged at Harlan's lips, his pride pricked. He thought she was just being pretentious, hiding behind Enoch like he was some kind of shield.
"Do you even realize once Enoch's kids are brought back into the Taylor family, you'll be nothing but a distant memory? You'll end up back in this tiny apartment, and your kids will end up just like you, attending the worst schools and living on a diet of the cheapest fast food. Drusilla, you're just selfish. Having those kids in the first place without a thought to the life they'd lead. Truth be told, they're living this way because of you! You claim to love them, but have you ever really thought about their future?"
The words hit Drusilla like a wave of nausea. "I don't need your guidance on how to live my life, and my kids will do just fine. Certainly better than someone who's always riding on women's coattails to get ahead!"
"Riding on women's coattails?" Harlan's face darkened at her words, a cold threat in his voice, "Say that again!"
"What, that you always ride on women's coattails to get ahead? Have I said anything untrue? You're always sweet-talking Lilith, treating her like she's some kind of deity. How are you any better than me?"
"Say it again." Harlan's anger was palpable now, a chill emanating from him that was unmistakable.
"You're always climbing the social ladder on women's backs! There, I said it again. What are you going to do about it?"
