Facing the little guy's question, Enoch glanced at the book's cover and said, "This? You wouldn't understand yet."
"My mom says when I grow up, I'll be able to read lots of words."
Enoch looked towards Cormac and asked, "And when will that be, you growing up?"
"Should be pretty soon, I guess." Cormac wasn't sure but was filled with hope for the future. "When I grow up, I'm gonna be able to protect my mom."
"Your mom's an adult. She can take care of herself."
Cormac objected, "That's not true. My mom's really fragile, and besides, there are lots of mean people always making her sad."
"Is that so?" Enoch was taken aback by the seriousness in the little guy's eyes.
Cormac nodded, "For real. Dad, will you help me protect Mom? They say dads are supposed to protect moms."
Hearing Cormac's words made Enoch frown, his thoughts drifting to Verena...
Even though she bore his children, he had no feelings for Verena.
Protect her?
No way!
Fortunately, Cormac didn't dwell on the matter. His gaze fell on a bowl of apples on the table, his mouth watering. They looked delicious.
But Mom had said not to eat just anything from others.
Seeing him swallow hard, Enoch offered, "Want one?"
Cormac shook his head, "No, thanks."
Observing him, Enoch picked up an apple and handed it to him, "Here."
Cormac leaned in, took a bite, and savored the taste, "Thanks, Dad."
Enoch's lips curled into a smile seeing Cormac’s well-mannered and polite demeanor.
Initially indifferent about being a father, Enoch suddenly felt an indescribable joy.
He was a dad!
