When Enoch laid it out like that, it really hit hard.
Imagine how Colton must’ve felt hearing that?
Enoch said, “Don’t worry about this, I’m just setting him straight. To save you the future hassle.”
Seeing things not going as she hoped, Lilith quickly jumped in, “Uncle Enoch, please, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have blamed Aunt Drusilla. Don’t be hard on Colton. He’s just a kid, doesn’t know any better.”
Lilith couldn’t stand it anymore! She initially wanted to pick a bone with Drusilla, but she didn’t expect Enoch to take it out on the kid.
Seeing Colton crying so pitifully, Lilith just wanted to smooth things over.
Enoch continued, “Your pleading on his behalf won’t change a thing. Today, no one’s words can sway me. Clearly, he’s been spoiled rotten by his mom at home! Here, I only speak reason. You hit someone, you apologize.”
Hearing Enoch’s words, Colton glanced at Harlan, pursed his lips, put down his fork, and slid off the chair, walking away.
So he’s not eating, big deal! But apologizing to Harlan, the big bully? That’s out of the question.
Drusilla, watching Colton, knew he wouldn’t apologize to Harlan. After all, Harlan had hit him first and hadn’t apologized.
Enoch, unaware of the full story, thought Colton was being unreasonable, but Drusilla knew exactly what was on Colton’s mind. She glanced at Enoch and said, “I’ll go check on him. You guys go ahead and eat. I’ve lost my appetite.”
The whole scenario had spoiled her mood! At home, she did discipline them, sometimes sternly, when they did wrong. But seeing Colton this upset, as a mother, it tore her apart.
Stepping outside, Drusilla found Colton standing alone against a wall, head bowed, fiddling with his toy car.
“Colton,” she called out softly.
He looked up, “Mom.”
