Drusilla raised an eyebrow, retorting, “He was out at the bar, I just suggested he cut back a bit, what’s the big deal?”
She didn’t think she had done anything wrong.
“Aunt Drusilla, it’s normal for guys to go out and have a few drinks. When Harlan goes out, I don’t make a fuss. You’re being a bit overbearing! Uncle Enoch is a grown man, isn’t he? Maybe ease up on him. The real question is, what are his buddies gonna think?”
Lilith said this, glancing at Enoch who seemed even more displeased, probably stewing over last night’s events.
Seizing the moment, Lilith stirred the pot further.
Drusilla sneaked a peek at Enoch, remembering the unfinished conversation from last night, at a loss for words. She lowered her head, saying, “Your uncle has been under the weather, he really shouldn't be drinking. As for what his friends think, I couldn’t care less. I’m worried about his health.”
“Really?” Lilith looked skeptical.
Drusilla found herself growing irritated with Lilith’s attitude. She had been patient, but Lilith kept pushing her buttons, and she finally snapped, “What’s your deal? ‘Really? Really?’ Don’t you get tired of hearing yourself? I’m married to your uncle, that makes me your aunt-in-law. A little respect wouldn’t hurt.”
The dining table was crowded today—Lilith, Blythe, Baxter, all were present. Drusilla usually kept her cool in front of everyone, adopting a ‘let bygones be bygones’ attitude towards Lilith.
But she hadn’t slept well, was feeling irritable, so naturally, her fuse was shorter.
Having said her piece, she felt everyone’s eyes on her.
Lilith, feeling the gaze of the table, bit her lip, playing the victim, “Aunt Drusilla, I was just speaking up for Uncle Enoch, no harm meant. Right, Uncle Enoch? Since when do women need to meddle in men's business? Look at Grandma; she never fusses over Grandpa!”
