"The shrimp is pretty good, the family cook sure knows her way around the kitchen," commented Saskia with an appreciative nod.
Cybele corrected gently, "It was Mrs. Taylor who made it."
"Oh, is that so!" Saskia exclaimed, "Mrs. Taylor, you have got some real talent."
Blythe took a deep breath, trying to keep her composure. This was exactly why she couldn't stand Harlan. She had dined with his family once before and it left a sour taste in her mouth. If it weren't for Lilith’s sake, she wouldn't have been able to swallow her pride today.
As the meal went on, Saskia, having nearly finished her plate, turned her attention to Drusilla. Remembering what Harlan had mentioned, that Drusilla was now married to Lilith's uncle, she couldn't help but ask, "By the way, Lilith, I haven’t seen your uncle around today. Didn’t he come down for dinner?"
Lilith glanced around, also noticing Enoch’s absence and shared her confusion, "I'm not sure. Oh, Aunt Drusilla, where's Uncle Enoch?"
"He must be busy with something," Drusilla replied, her appetite waning with Saskia’s presence. It was a struggle to ignore her!
Saskia couldn’t help but tease Drusilla upon hearing her, "How can you be someone’s wife and not even know what your own husband is up to?"
Drusilla's lips twitched in annoyance. "What my husband and I do is none of your concern. Who even are you to judge?"
Saskia, who always prided herself on her seniority, couldn’t stand being put on the same level as Drusilla, her former daughter-in-law.
Turning to Blythe, Saskia decided to air out some grievances, "Mrs. Taylor, I shouldn’t be the one to speak on your family matters. But we're all family here, and I feel it’s wrong not to share this. Drusilla here was once my daughter-in-law. When she married Harlan, her father gave a hefty wedding gift, and I thought to myself, how fortunate. But it turns out, this woman is no angel! While Harlan worked hard, she was off gallivanting with other men, and even had children! You should be wary of her."
Drusilla gasped at Saskia’s words. Her marriage to Harlan was when the Stanton family wasn’t well-off, and her father, wanting to ensure she wouldn’t suffer, gave a generous wedding gift. Upon their divorce, she never asked for anything back, yet now, in Saskia’s story, she was painted as the villain.
Verena, sitting quietly until now, was ready to explode in Drusilla’s defense, but Drusilla quickly held her back under the table.
