Verena paused for a moment, then broke into a laugh, settling down next to Drusilla and slinging an arm around her shoulders, “What’s up, sweetheart? Feeling a bit jealous?”
Drusilla replied, “Not at all.”
Verena said, “I’m just thrilled for you! You should’ve seen Harlan’s mom’s face. It was priceless! She started off so cocky, and then she couldn’t even muster a single word!”
Drusilla responded, “Exactly. It just shows that you need to be strong so people won’t mess with you.”
“Absolutely!” Verena, feeling a newfound tolerance for Enoch, added, “Now I’m thinking, maybe I was too harsh on Enoch this morning.”
“You’re just realizing that now?” Drusilla couldn’t help but feel embarrassed.
Verena considered, “Should I go apologize to him?”
“I think that’d be good.”
“Alright, I’ll go now!” Verena stood up with determination.
She had initially lashed out at Enoch because she felt he wasn’t treating Drusilla right. But seeing Enoch in a new light, her animosity had lessened.
Enoch was in his study when Verena walked in.
Upon seeing her, he frowned, “Get out!”
Just the sight of Verena brought back the headache of their morning confrontation.
As Enoch was about to call for someone, Verena bowed slightly, “I’m sorry.”
“...” Enoch stared at her, baffled, “What’s gotten into you?”
Verena explained, “I misunderstood you this morning, I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”
Enoch scoffed, “If you think this is a way to get my attention, you’re wrong. My heart belongs to my wife and no one else.”
Verena couldn’t help but admire his arrogance. Who would fall for him, anyway? But she let it go, thinking as long as he treated Drusilla well, it was all that mattered.
And importantly, Baxter and Blythe doted on him, backing every decision he made.
Harlan knew this all too well, which is why he never dared to confront Enoch directly.
Saskia admitted, “I had no idea he could be so tough!”
Especially after hearing about Enoch’s threat to send Harlan to Africana, she was genuinely scared.
Lilith, overwhelmed by the drama, said, “I want to rest now.”
“Then rest,” Saskia said, deciding to stay over. “I’ll keep you company.”
Lilith told Harlan, “Let Cybele know to prepare a room for mom.”
“Got it,” Harlan agreed.
After leaving Lilith’s room, Harlan led Saskia to her temporary quarters.
