After a while, Leander spoke up, “I’ll call the Taylor family later and have Merrick take you over there.”
Odette glanced up at him, surprised to find him staring right at her.
“Me?” she asked, a bit taken aback.
“Yes.” Leander’s resolve was firm, knowing the troubles Drusilla had faced. He was determined that Odette should handle the Taylor family situation herself, sparing Drusilla from getting entangled any further.
Drusilla had been through enough over the years. How could he keep burdening her with family issues?
Odette protested, “Dad, are you trying to ruin Mom’s life and now mine too? Drusilla’s already married to Enoch, and you’re trying to break them up just to shove me in?”
“Their marriage was a mistake to start with! It was all to fix the mess you made. What, Drusilla should stay with Enoch forever to atone for your mistakes?”
“She’s already been married once! Marrying Enoch was a stroke of luck! Who else would have a shot at a wealthy family after a divorce?”
“Say that again,” Leander’s voice rose, genuinely angered this time.
The whole situation with Drusilla and Harlan was already infuriating him, and Odette’s words were adding fuel to the fire.
Odette lowered her head, quietly picking at her food. She resented that she didn’t have a father like Drusilla’s.
Her dad had passed away early on, leaving her and her mom to fend for themselves. Once she was part of the Lawson family, Drusilla overshadowed her at every turn.
Drusilla just had the luck to be born into a better situation with a father who doted on her. What was so special about that?
Because of this, Odette was determined to marry a man far more successful than Drusilla’s husband. She would never end up with a loser like Enoch!
But Odette didn’t respond. By the time Drusilla and Leander had finished their dinner, Odette had packed her bags and come back downstairs.
She was serious about leaving.
She’d left once before and now was doing it again, and Leander had no intention of stopping her.
…
Hestia saw Odette off to catch a cab, and only returned once she was gone.
Seeing Drusilla and Leander still in the living room, she sat down and said to Drusilla, “Drusilla, this is my fault. Odette’s just too headstrong. She’s young and doesn’t understand... But you must keep Enoch steady with the Taylors. No matter what, we can’t let the family go bankrupt, right?”
Letting Odette leave was Hestia’s idea all along.
