"Enough," Drusilla interrupted Oberon mid-sentence. "I've called him so many times today. You know that, right?"
Oberon nodded, "I know."
"He didn't pick up!" Drusilla would forever remember the despair she felt when call after call went unanswered.
Relying on someone else, she realized, was the most ridiculous thing in the world.
"Is there something you need?" Oberon asked.
"No," Drusilla replied. "I won't need anything from him ever again. If you won't handle the divorce papers, I'll do it myself."
With that, Drusilla turned and walked into the bedroom. She sat down at her desk and opened her laptop. It had been ages since she'd last used it, but now she had no choice.
When she needed him, he wasn't there. So, she decided, he didn't need to be there in the future either.
Drusilla typed "divorce agreement" into the search bar when Enoch wheeled himself into the room. She glanced at him briefly before returning her focus to the screen, her fingers dancing across the keyboard as if he weren't there.
"Are you really going through with this?" Enoch asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.
She didn't respond, her attention fixed on the computer.
"Drusilla!" Enoch reached out, urging her to meet his gaze. "Look at me."
She did, but her resolve remained unshaken. "What difference does it make? My decision won't change."
Drusilla smirked, staring at the screen. "You think you're just some cripple? You're Enoch, the man who can make or break anything with a snap of his fingers. How could I possibly compete with that?"
Whether it was Kendrick or Enoch, she realized they belonged to worlds entirely different from hers.
"Stop with the sarcasm," Enoch snapped. "Your family has never seen me as anything more than a nobody. In their eyes, I'm probably less than ordinary."
The thought of being seen as inferior gnawed at Enoch's pride. Yet, for Drusilla's sake, he couldn't retaliate against the Lawson family.
"I'm not being sarcastic," Drusilla sighed. "I'm just stating the truth. Enoch, your leg is almost healed. Please, let me go. Let the Lawson family go. Can you do that?"
"No," Enoch's voice was firm. "If you even think about leaving, I promise you, the Lawson family will be bankrupt in no time."
