With that, Lauren placed the phone on the dining table so Xavier and the Patriarch could see clearly that she wasn’t wrongly accusing Aveline.

She refused to stay and have breakfast with me and Xavier, but she ran off to eat with Sebastian.”

He pointed at the phone screen. “You can twist a simple photo like this into something like that?”

Lauren shut her mouth, then opened it again. “Dad, it’s not me saying it. Someone posted this photo in a chat group, and everyone’s gossiping, saying this is Sebastian’s girlfriend. If they find out she’s my daughter–in–law, how can I show my face?”

The Patriarch demanded, “So what do you want? For Xavier and Aveline to get a divorce?”

Lauren was speechless.

The Patriarch snorted, stood up, and left.

Lauren waited until the Patriarch was gone, then looked at Xavier and said, “Why didn’t you say anything?”

Lauren glared at him. “You’re being so generous. Is it because of Jacob’s illegitimate daughter that you’re just dying to divorce Aveline?”

Xavier’s smile vanished. He said coolly, “Why are you still bringing this up? Grandpa will never agree. Don’t mention it again. If he hears it, he won’t just be slamming the table, he’ll be throwing things.”

Lauren frowned. “The night Aveline asked for a divorce, the Patriarch came back and called you into his study. Did he get angry and throw things at you?”

Xavier looked at Lauren with his deep, dark eyes, then smiled. “You said Aveline was my Guardian Angel, so desper- ate for me to get engaged and marry her. Now you can’t stand the sight of her. It just goes to show, you don’t appreci- ate what you have once you get it.”

Xavier finished his glass of milk and got up. “I have things to do. I’m leaving.”

Lauren stopped him. “I asked the Fortune Teller. If you two really did it on the night you got your marriage certifi- cate, she would definitely be pregnant. So tell me honestly, did you or didn’t you do it that night?”

Xavier adjusted his cuffs and said coolly, “If she were pregnant, Aveline would say so. There’s no use in you being anxious.”

With that, he walked out of the dining room.

Lauren stood in the dining room, frowning. Charles came over and asked if she wanted breakfast, but she was in no mood to eat. She turned and left the dining room too, going to call Aveline.

Aveline had just gotten back from a run. As soon as she walked in, Helena held out the phone and said, “Ma’am, it’s a call from Mrs. Beltran.”

Aveline frowned slightly, thinking about not answering, but Helena added, “Mrs. Beltran said it’s important.”

Aveline had no choice but to walk over and take it. “Hello.”

Lauren’s tone was hostile from the start. “Let me ask you, you were photographed having breakfast with Sebastian yesterday. Did you know that?”
