When he arrived at The Croft Tower, Claude Steele said to Xavier, “Mr. Beltran, the manager from the Mount Ard- wood branch called. He said it’s about Josephine.”

Xavier nodded and went into his office to take the call.

As soon as he picked up the receiver, he heard Josephine’s voice on the other end.

“Manager, did you call Mr. Beltran?”

The manager replied to her, “Ms. Sutton, I’m on the phone with him now.”

Josephine’s voice immediately turned aggrieved. “You have to tell him the truth about what happened.”

“Of course, Ms. Sutton.”

Xavier spoke up, “What is it?”

The manager quickly replied, “Ah, Mr. Beltran…”

The manager

told Xavier what he knew about the incident.

When Xavier heard that Aveline had thrown milk on Courtney, he frowned slightly. “How is Gabriel now?”

“The doctor has checked her and said the baby is fine.

But Gabriel keeps saying she’s uncomfortable. The doctor thinks it’s psychological, that she was frightened.”

Just then, Josephine said, “Manager, let me talk to my darling.”

Hearing Josephine call Mr. Beltran that, the manager figured their relationship must be special. Without even asking Xavier, he immediately handed her the phone.

Josephine’s voice was tearful. “Darling, my mom was scared. Her heart is still pounding, and she says the baby is moving a lot and won’t settle down. The doctor says it’s psychological. Can you ask my sister to apologize to my mom, to put her mind at ease?”

“As long as my sister promises not to treat my mom like this again, my mom will feel relieved and won’t be scared anymore.”

“My mom thought that since she’s having a son for my dad, my sister should be happy about it too. She never imag- ined my sister would try to harm her little brother.”

Xavier paused for a moment. “Alright, I’ll talk to your sister.

A flash of delight crossed Josephine’s face, but her voice was still choked with sobs. “Thank you, darling.”

Then she gave the phone back to the manager.

“Mr. Beltran?”

Xavier asked calmly, “Do you think it was an accident?”

The manager: “…Mr. Beltran, I didn’t see what happened. How about I pull up the security footage and send it to you?”

“Yes, send it over.”

Aveline was in the site office discussing blueprints with the engineers when the phone next to her rang.

She glanced at it, saw it was a call from Xavier, and coldly picked it up to decline the call, then put the phone in her

purse.

After that, a text notification sounded from her purse. She didn’t even have to guess to know it was from Xavier.

That morning, Jacob had called a few more times, but Aveline didn’t answer any of them.

When she returned to the hotel for lunch break, Aveline ran into the manager in the restaurant. He said to her:

Jasmine immediately let out a laugh. “See? Even Julian, as a guy, can’t stand Xavier anymore.”

Julian gave an awkward smile. “I’m just worried about Aveline.”

Aveline smiled faintly. “Thanks, Julian.

Xavier did call me, but I didn’t answer.”

As she spoke, she took her phone out of her purse to see what messages Xavier and Jacob had sent her.

Jacob had surely chewed her out, saying she was malicious and wanted to make Courtney miscarry. He also said that

Finally, he warned her to stay away from Courtney.

A sarcastic smile touched Aveline’s lips as she read.

She never wanted to get close to Courtney and Josephine, but they insisted on causing trouble for her, and now she wasn’t even allowed to fight back.

Aveline had no intention of replying to Jacob and opened Xavier’s message instead.
