Chapter 20
In the past Ashley would never say no to Chase and Sam, but now she had refused Sam twice today. Sam knew she was busy, but he didn’t care. He felt wronged. Why are you always busy? I want crispy pork and soup!”
“Sam… Ashley felt a headache coming on.
Sam hung up angrily. Ashley cried in her car before driving away. She had some noodles and opened her laptop when Tim called. “There’s a banquet in a few days. Come with me. I want to introduce you to some people.”
“Okay.
“When will you be done with your handover?”
Soon, in a few days.”
“Great.”
Sam expected Ashley to rush home and cook. But it was almost 8 pm, and she hadn’t returned. The butler knew he was hungry.”Sam, maybe you should have something to eat…”
“No!” Sam pouted, crying, “I want Mom’s cooking!”
The butler thought Ashley was truly busy and called Chase. He answered after a while.
“What’s the matter?”
The butler told him what was going on.
Chase said, “Give Sam the phone.”
Sam cried, Dad…”
“Eat first.”
Sam stubbornly refused. Chase remained silent, and Sam cried harder.
Chase calmly said, “We’ll go out this weekend. You choose the place.”
Sam stopped crying. “Really?”
Yes. You may eat now.”
“Did you have dinner?”
Im at a business party,”
‘Oh…”
‘Go eat.”
“Okay…
Sam cheered up and went downstairs. Chase returned to the private room. Someone said, “You get a lot of calls, Mr. Sterling.”
Chase sipped his wine. “My son wouldn’t eat and I just calmed him down.”
Everyone was surprised. Rumors circulated that Chase was married years ago, but no one knew who his wife was. Others said he wasn’t married at all. Now, hearing him mention his son, they were shocked. They didn’t dare ask more.
Sam waited for Ashley. It was 9 pm; he’d showered, but she hadn’t returned. Around 10 pm, he heard a car. He ran downstairs, shouting, “Mommy!” Seeing Chase, he stopped.”Dad?”
Chase gave his coat to the butler. Noticing his disappointment, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
I thought it was Mom…”
Chase wasn’t jealous. “She’s not back?”
“No…”
Chase wasn’t concerned. “She’s probably busy. Didn’t she promise to take you to school tomorrow? Go to bed; you’ll see her tomorrow.”
Sam cheered up.”Okay.”
Menu
Chase went to the study. It was almost midnight when he finished. He thought Ashley would be back, but she wasn’t. Something must have happened
at her family.
He went to shower.
The next morning, Ashley woke early to take Sam to school. She ate quickly and went out. Entering the familiar neighborhood, she felt a sense of
detachment.
She’d lived there for seven years; twenty days felt like a lifetime. Nothing had changed, but she felt estranged.
The butler greeted her.”Mrs. Sterling.” Ashley didn’t correct him.”Where’s Sam?”
