Chapter 9
Because of the medical accident-and with my Government-Sponsored Study Abroad coming up-the Chief told me to take a few days off.
So I stayed home, resting and preparing for the trip.
Then Lila showed up again, arms full of gifts.
“Dr. Carter,’ she started, her voice trembling. “My residency evaluation’s in a few days. I totally screwed up this time. My skills suck, I’m gonna fail for sure. Her eyes brimmed with tears. “But I really want to stay! If I don’t, my parents will marry me off to some fifty-year-old creep.”
1 felt my stomach twist.
“Lila, do you even hear yourself? You blamed me for that accident-almost destroyed my career-and now you want me to write you a recommendation letter? What about the interns who actually earned it? If you can’t pass, you leave. I’m not helping you.”
She cried, begged, even dropped to her knees. I still refused.
Finally, she left sobbing.
Not long after, Noah burst in and kicked open my door.
“Ella! Why do you have to ruin Lila’s future?!” he shouted in my face.
I blinked, stunned. “What are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb!” he roared. “Lila went to check on you, and you slashed her hand with a knife! Do you even realize she has her residency exam coming up? How’s she supposed to hold a scalpel now? I get you’re still pissed about the skin graft incident-that was my call. Take it out on me, not on
her!”
And just like that, I understood.
Another one of Lila’s self-written, self-directed dramas.
I met his furious gaze. “Noah, believe it or not-one, I didn’t touch her. Two, injured or not, with her attitude and skill level, she’d never pass that evaluation anyway. She doesn’t belong in that hospital.”
“What do you mean she doesn’t deserve it?!” Noah exploded. “She’s passionate! So what if she’s not perfect yet? I’ll talk to the Chief myself—she’s passing.”
My heart clenched hard.
The Chief was an old subordinate of Noah’s grandfather. If Noah said the word, it’d be done.
But Noah-he used to be the one preaching principles and fairness.
I still remembered the time I faced an unfair review and begged him for help.
He’d refused, dead serious: “Ella, it’s a matter of principle. I won’t use my position for you.”
And now, for Lila, he threw every principle away without blinking.
He was completely gone for her.
The ache in my chest was sharp enough to choke me. I turned away, forcing my voice to stay calm.
That’s your problem, not mine.”
Noah’s fury only burned hotter. “You don’t even feel guilty? Because of you, Lila’s hand might never heal! She came to me sobbing her heart out. And you think I’ll just let you off because you’re my fiancée? Forget it! Get in here!”
