Chapter 358
“Why are you pushing me away?” he whispered and cupped my check with his warm hand, gently tracing my sensitive skin with his thumb.
I opened my mouth, but I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to say.
Thankfully, I was saved by the shrill ringing of my phone. I looked down, and shock went through me when Gai’s name flashed across my screen.
“Where are you guys?” Gai slurred when I answered my phone. “I can’t find the car.
I sighed, knowing that we should have refused those sake shots.

Alexander stared at Olivia’s new cell phone, his head tilting to the side in curiosity. The entire ride back to the office, Alexander was lost in thought. He was distracted as he deposited Olivia and Gai on the couches in the waiting room to sleep off their drunken state. He made sure to put glasses of water and trash cans next to them. Then, he went back to his office to complete his work.
But try as he might, he couldn’t focus on his work. He gave up when the sun went down, and he realized that he had been staring at the same email for half an hour. He knew that he couldn’t possibly be productive when his mind was so cluttered with thoughts of Olivia’s addicting mouth and the way that she seemed to be distancing herself from him.
Olivia and Gai were more coherent when he exited his office. He avoided Olivia’s eyes, made sure that they had water, and called two cabs to take them home safely. Alexander gave the taxi drivers a big tip to make sure that they got inside their apartments safely.

He didn’t want to go back to the apartment building where Olivia would only be one floor below,
presence torturing him with each second that passed. Instead, he drove to his parents‘ house as the sun slipped down the horizon. It was twilight as he entered his parents‘ mansion.
His father was working in his study, and he found his mother enjoying the evening breeze on the third floor roof garden. Alexander smiled as he stared at his mother in her happy place, surrounded by vibrant flowers and plants that she took care of on her own. This garden was the only thing that his mother cared for in his parents‘ large house. It was the only place that was truly
hers.

Helen turned around, and a radiant grin crossed her face when she spotted her son. “Alexander! What a lovely surprise.” She walked toward him and kissed his check.
“It’s good to see you, Mother,” he said and bent down so that his mom wouldn’t have to struggle to reach his cheek.
They sat on the white deck chairs facing the back yard, and Helen had a maid bring them a pot of english breakfast tea and a plate of snickerdoodle cookies.
As they sipped their tea, Helen turned to her son with an excited grin. “Are you excited that Jess is coming back to town?”
Alexander took a deep breath before he answered. He didn’t want to fight with his mother. That wasn’t why he came here. He tried his best to keep his face expressionless, but when he met her gaze, Helen was still slightly intimidated by her son’s intense stare.
“Why are you glaring at me like that?” she asked and touched the crease in Alexander’s forehead.
Alexander moved away from his mother’s touch and counted to ten–something he did in an attempt not to say something he would come to regret.
“Honey, you look pale,” Helen said before Alexander had a chance to speak. “Are you hungry? You work too much. Have you even had a chance to eat? Why don’t you have a cookie?” She gestured to the plate of snickerdoodles.
