Chapter 1: How About I Get You Someone Else?
Britney Simpson was absolutely stunning in her pristine white wedding gown. The strapless design, paired with a shimmering diamond necklace, highlighted her incredibly slender waist, accentuated by the voluminous skirt. Even without a stitch of makeup, her delicate features were captivating.
“You look absolutely gorgeous! Now all we need is a groom.” The bridal shop assistant couldn’t help but gush. “When is your fiancé, Mr. Lewis, arriving?”
“Thank you,” Britney replied with a polite smile. “He’s out of the country on a business trip and couldn’t make
it back.”
Britney’s life had been tough. At just three months old, she was accidentally lost by a careless nanny. She spent time in an orphanage and even slept in open parks, often going hungry, forced to take shady odd jobs just to survive. She truly experienced the bitterest hardships until the Simpsons finally found her when she
was sixteen.
However, her parents had already adopted Skylar Simpson. Britney felt like an outsider, watching Skylar monopolize their parents‘ affection, the room that should have been hers, and the position of the elder Simpson heiress.
To avoid hurting Skylar, the Simpsons never publicly disclosed Britney’s true identity, merely announcing to the outside world that they had adopted another goddaughter. Only old Mr. Lewis, a close friend of the Simpsons, treated her kindly. Seeing that Britney and Ryan Lewis were deeply in love, he took the initiative to arrange their engagement.
Britney’s small hands lovingly smoothed over the skirt of her gown. Soon, she would have a home of her own, a place where someone would always love her.
Just then, Britney’s phone rang. It was a photo from an unknown number. She tapped it open, and her smile instantly froze. The picture showed a warm garden wedding, with the bride and groom passionately embracing and kissing. Britney recognized both newlyweds all too well–Skylar Simpson and Ryan Lewis.
“Ms. Simpson, are you… okay?” the assistant asked cautiously. “Ms. Simpson?”
Britney snapped back to reality, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m fine. Could you please help me change out of this dress?”
Britney rushed to the wedding venue shown in the photo. Her chest heaved from the frantic running, and her

legs felt numb. She saw the lively wedding banquet in full swing and the photos on the directional signs, her eyes welling up with tears. Quickly, she wiped her eyes, desperately searching for proof that this was all a mistake, that Ryan couldn’t be here, he just couldn’t!
When she spotted that familiar figure, she stumbled, her eyes uncontrollably stinging and turning red. There was no way Britney could deceive herself anymore. Her fiancé, Ryan Lewis, dressed in the same groom’s suit from the photo, was now holding Skylar Simpson, who wore a wedding gown, surrounded by their friends who were teasing them.
Harsh voices pierced Britney’s ears: “Wow, only Ryan could pull this off, bagging both Simpson sisters. What a lucky guy!”
“Seriously, Ryan, why not just make this fake wedding real? Ditch that half–deaf Britney.”
“Yeah, exactly! It wouldn’t sound good if Ryan’s wife was disabled.”
“Not just disabled, but stiff as a board. She’d probably be like a dead fish in bed, right?”
The teasing remarks kept coming, like thunder booming through Britney’s eardrums, striking her heart. She had met most of Ryan’s friends before, and they usually acted like perfect gentlemen. It was shocking to hear how truly awful they perceived her to be.
Ryan had his back to Britney, so she couldn’t see his expression. But she clearly saw her sister, Skylar,
already nestled in his arms, saying thoughtfully, “I’ve already gotten so much. But Britney only has Ryan. I can
let this go.”
“Just having this wedding is more than enough for me.
Ryan’s hand tightened around Skylar’s waist. A cool wine glass traced a teasing path from her collarbone up her cheek, making her burrow deeper into his embrace. “Skylar, you’re so sensible. As long as you don’t say anything stupid in front of Britney, anything she has, I’ll give you double.”
“And remember this…” Ryan paused, his voice turning colder. “Britney isn’t disabled. She just has a bit of hearing loss in her left ear, not as good as a normal person’s.”
“Oh, right, right, Mr. Lewis is absolutely right!” his friends echoed with laughter.
Ryan’s words hit Britney like a thunderbolt, shattering her heart into countless pieces. The pain turned her face pale, her lips trembled slightly, and tears streamed down uncontrollably. The agony quickly spread through her entire body, even her left ear throbbed painfully, and the festive sounds became a muffled, buzzing noise as if separated by a thick barrier.
The relationship she had once so firmly believed in had utterly collapsed at that moment.
When she was sixteen and rejoined the Simpson family, she met Ryan. Back then, no one wanted to talk to a country bumpkin like her, but he was always the one who noticed her in the corner. He patiently taught her how to use complicated cutlery, how to distinguish valuable paintings and haute couture, and he would hold

her hand, navigating through crowds, never minding her naivete..
When she was eighteen, the Simpson mansion accidentally caught fire, and she was trapped. It was Ryan who, despite everyone’s protests, rushed in to save her. In that fire, his back suffered severe burns, and she, in trying to shield him from falling furniture, injured her left ear, leaving its hearing at only one–tenth of normal. From then on, Ryan became the only person she could trust, the brightest light in her life. She had always firmly believed they would marry, and Ryan would love her forever.
Now she realized it wasn’t true. His tenderness and care could also be “doubled and compensated” to Skylar. His so–called love and being “the one” were nothing more than a carefully concealed illusion.
“Isn’t that Britney Simpson?” Someone blurted out Britney’s name, and everyone finally noticed her.
Ryan met her disappointed gaze, his expression changing abruptly. He instinctively pushed Skylar away and hurried over, grasping Britney’s wrist. “What are you doing here?”
Britney’s left ear ached intensely, and Ryan’s voice fragmented into countless pieces, crashing repeatedly in her mind. She looked at Ryan, impeccably dressed in his suit, and her voice was hoarse. “You lied to me about a business trip just to throw Skylar a wedding?”
Ryan’s eyes flickered slightly, a hint of guilt appearing then quickly vanishing. “Britney, our wedding will be far
grander than this, held with the blessings of all our elders. Isn’t that enough?”
“You’ve been away from the Simpson family for too long; you don’t know that these kinds of things are normal in this circle. Skylar also promised not to contend with you for anything. You’ll still be my lawful wife.”
“You can pretend nothing ever happened.”
